About to upgrade my reciever for the new audio formats and want to preserve
playabilty of my 704 and other players.

I recall seeing years ago a mod to these machines so one could simply use a
coaxial in for AC3.

Help, anyone???

Thanks in advance

If you have a 704 then you are looking for an AC-3 RF Demodulator. You can
fine those on eBay.

The LD player modifications are to install the AC-3 RF output to the older
players. The CLD-D704 already has that. There are schematics and I still
install this in older players.

There was a company, Precision Laserdisc, that developed a AC-3 RF
Demodulator board you could put inside your players also but this and the US
company then vanished. I still wonder if this was for copyright reasons.

Just go to eBay and search for AC-3 RF Demodulator. Some are simple
demodulators and some are switchers that you connect both the digital output
and the AC-3 RF from the LD player to. If an AC-3 signal is present it
passes that to the receiver, If the AC-3 RF is nor present it passes the
signal from the digital output.

I believe BDE is the European parent company to Precision Laserdisc. If you
look they do still sell the AC-3 RF kits but not the internal AC-3 RF
demodulator board you can add to players. They do sell standalone AC-3 RF
demodulators and boards to add a standard coax digital output to the player
if not there. There was a short period Precision Laserdisc sold and shipped
the AC-3 RF demodulator boards but then quickly shut down the US site and
disappeared, I repaired a CLD-97 that had one of these boards in it.
Problem is that they were not switching boards so you had one digital cable
going to the receiver for AC-3 and another for PCM and DTS. I prefer my
external switching AC-3 demodulator.

Thanks for the responses..

I was hoping for an internal, but I yield to Kurtis' point of view. Your
reputation here is flawless.

Interesting discussion I've stumbled onto here it seems...

BDE was our partner and hardware supplier. Benedikt is still selling
laserdisc and other modifications from Germany. Do check out his site:
http://www.bde.de/

No conspiracies, no copyright problems. We sold AC-3 RF mods (and a few
related items) for almost 5 years. Related business ventures fell on hard
times and we folded up shop, simple as that.

The CLD-97 was probably my all time favorite LD player. Great looks and a
pleasure to work on (AC-3 modding). Our RF out kit was always meant to be
that and only that, a provider of an AC-3 "RF" output. Most receivers/
decoders of the day had RF demodulators built-in so you wired once for
Dolby Digital AC-3 and once for a PCM digital (or DTS) signal. The
demodulator was unfortunately one of the first things to go from most
decoders/receivers though.

For a much shorter time we also sold an internally-installable RF
demodulator from Sample Rate Systems.

As a matter of fact I was recently doing some "spring cleaning" and
stumbled across a few items some of you may be interested in.

(2) LD-3 AC-3 RF out kits (LD-3 is adjustable, used to charge a bit more
for it)
(2) AC-3 RF Demodulator boards from Sample Rate
(12) 6-Channel Input boards
(1) CLU digital switcher

All but the RF demod are described on BDE's website. He now sells a
version of the CLU with the RF demod board included, I simply have some
of the raw boards which could be installed inside an LD player or
receiver.

Shoot me an email if you're interested in any of these.

Thanks.
