On the Panasonic DVD recorder model E50 I have
been getting frequent aborts when trying to record
to a new DVD. I am using Ritek blanks which have
proved to be reliable when written to by a computer.
The problem is that a timer record aborts with the
message: "recovering", and thereafter the machine
shuts down. I can power back up, open the disk
drawer, and restart the recording at the cost
of losing a minute or so of the program.
If this problem I unique to my machine I will
return it for an exchange.
The problem is the Ritek discs. Some recorders have different drives that
don't like them. Try another brand of disc (stay away from bulpaq as well).
I have used JVC and Maxell discs ok. Nan Ya (I think that is spelt right)
discs are supposed to be ok with the E50. Mirror discs work as well.

When you don't know what to do, walk fast and look worried.
1. Do not use any type of 4x DVD-R.
2. Avoid Ritek.
3. Use these inexpensive DVD-Rs
http://store.yahoo.com/meritline/accu-1x-dvd-r-blank-media-dvdr-disc-discs-bulk.html
The Panasonic ROM has a very bad code design that does not handle errors on
media very well. I have gotten
to the point on my DMR E50 that the machine would start, say 'recover', then
immediately say 'bye' and turn off. This is serious. The eject button
would not eject the DVD-R.
The solution is to hold the power button in for at least 1 minute (time
carefully) while the machine starts, then press eject several times to get
rid of
the offending disk.

I've just had this happen to me, for the first time. The disc that
failed was a Mirror. I've used about a dozen Ritek 2X overprints in
the last week or so, without any failures...

I've used close to 100 4X Riteks (and a couple of dozen 4X Princos) dvd-r
discs on my E30 with not one problem. They work perfectly.
I use them because at the price I got, buying 1X would have been idiotic. I
buy them in packs of 50 and use them in both the E30 and my Pioneer 105 so I
don't need to keep track of which are which.
I did have a problem with some older 4X cheapie (Pro something) discs.
Discs that work in the 30 work in the 50 according to all accounts I've read.
Now let's also not forget that there are different grades of 4X discs that
sport the same brand name. Nex
I am sorry to contradict. Firstly, there are Riteks and there are Riteks
(batch variability). A google on this subject relative to the E50 will
confirm my observations, since other users have experienced the same
problems. I found the Princo 4x to also be problematic.
I cannot comment on the E30. For the E50, take my advice. And Caveat
Emptor.
>about 400 ritek disks burned so far on my E50 all 4 speed not one problem
>but as I say I only use ram now
I have recorded literally thousands of Ritek DVD-Rs using Panasonic
E30 and E80 and here's my input on this problem:
I would say that the "recover" mode kicks in at the beginning of about
10% of the blank DVD-Rs used. I developed this procedure, which so
far has worked 100% of the time.
When I stick a blank Ritek DVD-R in the recorder, I record a short
section (about 15 seconds) on the disc and then erase it. The
"Recover" mode doesn't kick in until about 1 to 1 1/2 minutes into the
disc, so this doesn't give it a chance to kick in.
Then I make my recording. Works every time.
I can say without question that this little glitch has nothing to do
with media incompatibility. It has to do with something that is being
read erroneously at the very beginning of the disc. Making that short
recording and then erasing it makes the problem go away every time, so
I just do it as a matter of course now.

You are very lucky. I have a batch of 50 Ritek 2x that absolutely lock up
the E50 big time. And the 4x did no better for me. There
may be machine ROM variations that account for the fact that some E50s work
with them and some don't.

I have had the recover problem happen when I try to append something
to a previously recorded disk. In either case [fresh disk or otherwise]
I don't think anything is written to the disk when the "recover" mode
occurs. This thing suggests to me that the problem is mechanical,
such that the spindle is not picking up the disk correctly.
In contrast to a dvd-player, the E50 allows us to use the disk in
a cartridge. I am going to get such a holder and see if that changes
anything.

Interesting, with my E50 it's the opposite - the recover
issues always happens in the first minute or so of the
very first recording, but once anything is on a disc I've
never had a problem adding additional material.
And it always seemed media related, when a spindle of discs
started acting up if I just set them aside and used another
set same or different brand the problem stopped and I just
used the questionable discs in my pc burner which seems to
be more forgiving of whatever was causing the E50 to have
problems.
drc :)
You make this sound easy, I have just purchased a LG DVD-RAM reader for my
PC having a Sony DVD write (510). Using TMPG DVD Author I cannot get the
programs off the DVD-RAM, it only picks one half of one of the two
programmes on the DVD RAM!! I also cannot cut and paste the VOR file from
the DVD-RAM as I get an error about recycling data!
I am also getting blocks and artefacts on the recording of TV onto the DVD
RAM using the Panasonic-E50, I am still using the disk that came with the
machine. Should I stick to recording one program on a freshly reformatted
DVD-RAM or send the machine back!
Any thoughts??

What speed are you recording at?
I record tv shows in sp and lp to the original ram
and various brand dvd-r's from 1x to 4x and have
never seen blocking or artifacts.

> drc :)
On my E30, in SP mode (5MB/s avg) in *extreme* cases I can detect artifacts.
In LP mode I can sometimes detect them but they're not bothersome (at that
point the resolution can be). In XP mode (10 MB/s avg) I never encounter
artifacts. Nex
What brand/model DVD drive did you get that allows you to read DVD-RAM
on your computer?
Its an MSI drive mate had a sticker on the box saying DVD-Ram compatible
The new Pioneer A07 DVD+/-R 8x reads RAM, and a number of Toshiba and LG
DVDROM models also support reading the format--it is becoming
increasingly supported. Finding drives that write to the format is more
difficult. See www.newegg.com for listings of readers (they don't carry the
A07 yet).
Thanks Luminos.
I am convinced that you are right when you say that the "recover"
problem is caused by the Ritek disks. Although I have had great
success with Ritek on a Pioneer DVD-105 computer drive, the disks
seem to be repugnant to the Panasonic E50.
I tried TDK 2x and Office Max 1x blanks with no problem in the
E50. I have some Accu blanks on order.
The last Ritek I ran through the E50 was a total disaster:
I programmed two events with the last event an FR recording.
I left the machine unattended and came back after recording
was completed. When I turned on the machine to finalize the
disk it went through the "READ" stage and I initiated the
finalize process. The machine wrote a bit and then shut
down. Thereafter, with a tiny bit of the finalization
written, the disk cannot be finalized. So the disk can
never be played on any machine other than the E50 itself.
Try giving the disk a title through the menu before attempting any
recording.
Dont ask me why it works, but it seems to do the trick.

John, thanks for the tip/procedure. I was experiencing a similar
problem with some Riteks on my E-100. Tried the 15 second trick and
that allowed me to work around it. Unfortunately, even 15 seconds
caused the failure which on my system shutdowns the E-100 and then
goes through a recover process that is a bit time consuming. However,
after this I am able to record the rest of the DVD-R.
How did you record that 15 second section. Did you high speed dub it,
use a specific quality setting, or record directly? I'm trying to keep
my recorder from kicking into the recover process.
For me it is only an issue with Ritek 4Xs I'm using. Some memorex 4X
work like a charm.

This could work similar to the 15 second trick someone else mentioned
since it'll write a small chunk of data to the disc. I'll try it
tonight and see if it works for me.
Mark
Mark,
I make the 15 second recording in SP mode. I have noticed that if you
are recording in SP mode, a disc will trigger the recovery mode 1 to
1.5 minutes into the disc, if it does it at all. If you are in high
speed dubbing mode, it does it much more quickly.
Since I made my original post, I have had a couple of discs that
behaved as you indicated...they went into recovery mode when I tried
to record my 15 second section, but then the disc was usable. I just
got a new batch of discs in (I use Ritek Grade A G03) and these discs
look much different from previous ones I have used.
I very much like the suggestion that was made about writing the title
to the disc before starting recording/dubbing. I have tried that
about 20 times today with perfect results so far.
--John A,
Thanks to Frank Hume for this trick. I went back and was able
to recover the disk that could not be finalized.
Thanks
Mark
