On a related subject, the specs I've seen online for this player sometimes
claim that it can handle DivX and/or Xvid but sometimes they say they can't
play those formats. Does anyone know if the Canadian model of this player
does or does not handle DivX and/or XVid?
Also, what is the connection between AVI and DivX/XVid? I have the feeling
that AVI is some kind of subset of either DivX or Xvid but I don't really
know how they are related and what the implications of that are. If someone
would clarify that, I'd appreciate it!

Jeez, with all the questions, you could have simply done a bit of
googleing yourself. The topics have been discussed ad infinitum.
Also, the box her player came in will declare what compatibilities it
has.
Spend some of YOUR OWN time attempting to garner a bit of knowledge,
silver platter pushbutton boy.
While bent lever's riposte has merit, this is supposed to be a
video.dvd information group.
If *you* can play the AVI files which contain divx and/or xvid
encoded video and your mom's player can not, you've answered
your own question. Convert them to DVD format (Google will
enlighten you as to what software is available for this) and
burn that set of files to DVD and she'll most likely be able to
play them.
