Hi

Sad news, as the latest Widescreen Review reports, D. Paul Gregg has passed
away in early Sept. He has been challenged on his claims of 'fathering' optical
disc technology, and has NOT been dethroned. He was not very impressed with
LD's successor, the DVD, saying "Gentleman, it will not fly in Peoria".

His thoughts and experiments for a better technology were on a new tape based
digital medium that he felt would revolutionize the digital medium, whether
this ever comes to be, I couldn't say now.

The article, World on a Silver Platter covers his career in depth, and can be
found at WR's site for the minimal subscription fee, but is also in Laser Magic
1999 special edition.

I offer condolences for a man who had a vision, and brought the optical disc
into being. DVD I see as a logical and natural progression of his work, even
though he was not specifically affiliated with it.

RIP, Bill

Nope. The flaws of tape are one of the best reasons for moving from VHS to DVD.
