Synopsis: From the director of Harry and Snowman and Life in the Doghouse, ParaGold follows the lives of four Paralympic equestrian hopefuls as they vie for a spot on the U.S. Paralympic Dressage team.

The film focuses on Roxy Trunnell, Rebecca Hart, David Botana and Sydney Collier on their quest to qualify for - and hopefully win - gold medals at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo. Each of the four riders has severe physical disabilities, but determination and the bond with their horses propel them to greatness.

Para Dressage is the highest expression of horse training for athletes with a physical disability. Conducted under the same basic rules as Olympic-level Dressage, the athletes are classified according to the level of their disability. They must direct their horse to perform at a walk, trot, and canter, and all tests are ridden from memory and follow a prescribed pattern of precise movements. Para Dressage is the only equestrian discipline included in the Paralympic Games, the second largest sporting event in the world after the Olympic Games.

Critique: The documentary ParaGold shows the lives, hopes, and dreams of four Paralympic equestrian athletes, each of whom aspires to earn a place on the U.S. Paralympic Dressage team. (The Paralympic Games are a major series of international sport competitions involving athletes with disabilities; dressage is a horse riding sport in which the horse and rider are expected to perform predetermined movements from memory.) Training for the highest level of athletic competition is difficult, and dressage requires financial sponsors since horses need expensive care. Each of the athletes confronts challenges every day from their disability, whether it's physical pain, restricted movement, or the psychological burden of knowing that the condition that caused their disability will worsen over their time, or possibly even claim their life at a young age. One athlete in particular, seventeen-year-old David, has to balance training and practice with demanding academic studies, since he desires to one day achieve breakthroughs in the field of medicine. ParaGold does not shy from showing the hardships of life with a disability - the athletes speak openly about their worst days, in their own words - but ParaGold is ultimately a profoundly inspirational story about dedication, purpose, and making the absolute most of one's life. ParaGold is highly recommended especially for high school, college, and public library DVD collections, and makes an excellent gift for anyone who loves horses or the sport of dressage! It should be noted for personal viewing lists that ParaGold is also available in a digital format from Amazon instant video, AppleTV, iTunes, or Vimeo. 85 min.
