if anyone's interested, bestbuy.com has it for preorder at $19.99 with a $10
digital coupon sent via email. i'm interested in ordering but i'd like to
know what i'd be getting!

thanks
Jesus, is that really the cover for it? They seem to be making the
covers crappier and crappier.

HAHAHA, i know what you mean! i never got my hands on the 'old' 2 disc LE
but this new edition sure looks like it may be close to a re-issue of that
(damn anchor bay and all their versions from this 'trilogy'!). i think i
heard that the R2 version has a DTS track on it though which i don't think
was on the R1 LE. i guess it doesn't really matter....i'll probably order
this one anyway but i was just curious.
woh! i take that back as i just noticed that this is a Universal release!
Why do you think it's a Universal release? I notice the picture
of the box cover has the Universal logo on the bottom left:
http://www.bestbuy.com/movies/promo.asp?m=270&p=3225
However, The old Limited Edition had that as well (I'm looking
at it right now). AOD is licensed from Universal by Anchor
Bay. From the specs on the best buy site, it looks like it's
the LE re-issued. However, you can get the same two
discs as the LE now just by getting the theatrical disc and
the "bootleg" disc. I heard rumors of a possible European
print that is in better shape than the "Director's Cut," but
I don't have any idea what this Boomstick Edition has.
As for the covers, the LE with the original poster art is
the best. The Limited "Director's" disc had okay alternate
art, but the Theatrical DVD's art was horrible, and the
"Bootleg" DVD's art, while not awful, was pretty dull.
This new "Boomstick" art beats them all though, looking
like something a 12-year-old with Photoshop would come
up with.
-Jay "I mean, whats with the ED2 skull being on the cover?"
you're absolutely right! it's on anchor bay's website (dont' know why i
never looked there...doh!)
check out this pic though:
http://www.bestbuy.com/movies/ProductInfo.asp?e=10144074&m=270&cat=&scat=
this is the only version i have but mine *does* have a universal logo at the
bottom left (but this pic shows the anchor bay logo).
"something a 12-year-old with Photoshop would come up with."
LMAO, yeah.....but i need the content without paying huge bucks. i held off
on picking up the 'bootleg' director's cut cuz i've been waiting to see what
this new edition had to offer. for basically less money, looks like i'm
still better off buying the 'boomstick' edition.
That pic also has the Universal logo on the bottom left. It looks
like the far left of the pic represents the spine (The title is written
sideways on it).

Yeah, for $10 (after figuring in the coupon), the "Boomstick" edition
is definately a good buy even if it is nothing more than the LE repackaged
with a crappy cover.
-Jay
right again! geez, i'm just gonna give up now ;)
i guess this whole nonsensical thread has at least convinced me to order the
'boomstick' edition regardless of the unknown soundtrack(s) specs!
thanks for playing along

Sure, I had fun.

What about the "Bootleg" version that I saw in Best Buy the other day? Does
it offer anything that the original two versions (THX Remaster and Limited
Edition) don't offer? The description on the back didn't really indicate
that there was anyhting new.
As far as I know, there wasn't really a proper 2 disc version. There were
two versions initially - the THX remastered version and the Limited Special
Edition version with some footage put in (which, despite being made AFTER the
THX version, wasn't well remastered and has crappy A/V quality). The limited
edition 2 disc version simply contained both single disc versions.

Change each dollar sign to an "e".
Here's a quick history off all the Army of Darkness DVDs for
Region 1, listed in order of release:
1)The Universal disc. Barebones and non-anamorphic I believe. Had
the original poster art though.
2)The 2-disc Limited Edition.
- The first disc is the theatrical release, anamorphic with DD5.1 sound.
The original ending is included as an extra, as well as a
behind-the-
scenes documentary.
- The 2nd disc is the "Original Director's Cut," with scenes taken
from a sub-par print. Also includes 4 scenes still not in either
cut,
as well as a full-length Commentary with Sam Raimi and Bruce
Campbell. Ivan Raimi joins them latter in the track. Also features
storyboards as a PIP shown during the feature.
This was released in a limited run of 30,000 in the US, and a smaller
run of 4,000 in Canada. This is the only other release that has the
original poster art.
3)The Theatrical DVD.
The exact same as disc one of the above LE. Released at the same time
as the LE, this was what Anchor Bay intended to be it's permanent
release.
The cover art for this is a crappy montage of movie scenes.
4)The Limited Edition "Director's Cut" 1-disc DVD
The exact same as disc two of the original 2-disc LE. This was released
several months later to help abate demand for the now OOP 2-disc.
This release was limited to 40,000 copies in the US.
The cover art is alternate artwork of Ash torso-up with arms
outstretched.
5)The "Bootleg" DVD
The exact same as disc two of the original 2-disc LE, and of the
other LE. Released because the second LE release still didn't
abate demand for the Director's Cut disc. Anchor Bay kept
this one in print.
The cover art replicates a brown-paper wrapper covering up
the 1-disc LE art.
6)The "Boomstick" 2-disc DVD
Exact specs aren't know, but this appears to be a non-limited
release of the original LE (release #2).
The cover art is Photoshop Hell.
Note that all but the first DVD are Anchor Bay releases. AB
clearly underestimated demand for the Director's Cut, and have
been making amends ever since. Appearently AB has kept
the original poster art (the best) limited to the original LE as
a way to pacify those who forked over for what they thought
was gonna be a limited release.

Shouldn't they rename it to the "Army of Darkness annual DVD edition" ?

Not sure if that's the same one I had, but there's a one disc "Bootleg
Director's Cut" version of Army of Darkness with deleted scenes re-edited
in, and it has the "original" ending. The quality of the deleted scenes
were shocking, and the "original" ending sucks. I don't wanna say
anything since it sounds like some of you here haven't seen it, but man it
was CRAP. Avoid this version.

I prefer the original ending. Actually, the only thing about the theatrical
version I prefer is the "Good, Bad, I'm the one with the gun" line. I like
the way Ash is more of an asshole in the international version.
well, after watching the theatrical ending I started saying crap like
"come get some" and "hail to the king baby"... but after watching the
original ending I find myself screaming "I slept too longggggggg" from
time to time for no reason...
ahhhhh, I slept too longggggggggggg!!!

for me the alternate ending just really shows Ash's character. Look at the
first two movies...he's not the sharpest crayon in the box most times. To
quote the commentary, Ash is a good quick thinker, but a bad slow thinker.
If it's a big action scene where he has to do something quickly, he'll get
it right...but if he has to actually think about it (like memorizing 3
words, or drinking a magic potion properly) he'll screw it up. Also, the
second ending opens the possibility for a post-apocalyptic Evil Dead, which
I think is a great concept.
