Royalty Free: The Music of Kevin MacLeod is a DVD documentary about American composer and musician Kevin MacLeod (b. 1972), who has released thousands of his original compositions royalty-free under a Creative Commons copyright license, enabling anyone to use his music for free as long as he receives attribution. This has resulted in his work being used in thousands of films, as well as commercial video games, YouTube videos, and more. Royalty Free also explores the ramifications of the digital audio revolution, which as empowered composers to effectively create an orchestra singlehandedly. The "democratization of music" has two sides - it has enabled great creativity, yet also put the livelihood of some music artists at risk, notably Broadway musicians. Royalty Free: The Music of Kevin MacLeod is as fascinating as it is insightful, and highly recommended for both personal and public library documentary collections. 91 min., English language with both English and Spanish subtitles.
