Funny thing, though. By the time I left that night the Episode 1 shows
for Wednesday evening were only half-sold out.
Could it be that people were discouraged by the hype of long lines and
sold out shows?
Just a thought.

I disagree with the percentage, but not the sentiment. Most people will see
it like a normal movie, when it's convenient for their schedule, and they
don't have to stand in line too long. Only a few fanatics will treat this
movie as if it is a lifestyle.

Hmph. I heard it only made half that (according to CNN on Thursday night at
11:30PM).
I saw it tonight (Thursday) at a theater where they had it on 2 screens. One
screen is the biggest in Denver (at the Continental) and, as it would figure,
they were sold out through...only Friday. Whoopee. At the smaller screen
(still a large one by the way), it was only half full, and this was at an 8PM
showing. Hmph.
It might do really well for the weekend opening, but only by virtue of the
magical fact that Hollywood seems to recognize Wednesday through Sunday as a
"weekend", and the fact that some theater chains raised prices by $0.50 "just
in time" for the opening.
The only reason I saw it was because someone else bought tickets and had one
person cancel out. Otherwise I could have easily just waited for it to hit
the bargin $1.50 theaters, or see it on video.
The ONLY justifiable reason to see it on a big screen is the pod race, but
c'mon...I've seen better car chases in 3rd rate movies. But hey...whatever.

>Try $28,542,349. For more info on opening day totals check this site out.. http://news.excite.com/news/r/990521/03/entertainment-film-starwars As far as it only being sold out through Friday or whatever date consider the fact that in many locations it is playing around the clock in five theaters. This isn't 1977 when it was playing in one theatre for two shows a night.

yea well when I posted that message, all the sites I checked were
saying 45 million. Obviously a bit overly optimistic.

ummm...hello yourself! Actually TPM grossed $28 Million on opening day.

No, it didn't. $28 million was a much more realistic number. Of
course, I KNEW the losers would count in the ridiculous $500 per
ticket charity events in the box office numbers.

The pod race was a blatant rip-off of the chariot race scene in
Ben-Hur. Now THAT I'd like to see in a theater again!

Today's Arizona Repulsive said that was exactly the reason.

Now how does that amount as far as dollars per screen? Compared to other movies?

Phantom Menace will probably be out on DVD next year around the time of the VHS
release. Why would he wait 6 years to release a film on video? I can
understand if it's a back catalog title like SW.
