I've had two different versions, but they were both different from the
version I remember.
The two versions I mentioned were the Anchor Bay 1999 packing version, and
the Bootleg version.
In the version I remember Ash say "I ain't that good" after he shoots the
bad Ash, but in the Anchor Bay 99 version he says "Good, bad - I'm the one
with the gun"...
So did I remember the line wrong, or is there another version of the movie
out on DVD somewhere? Friend of mine was sure that this version is
different as well.
<=[BC]=>
"I ain't that good" is from the Bootleg Director's Cut and has the
Apocalypse ending. "Good, Bad, I'm the one with the gun" is from the
theatrical version and has the S-Mart ending. Both versions are
avialable in the new Boomstick Edition. I bought both versions
seperately about two months before Boomstick was announced. I hate it
when Anchor Bay does that.
What's the Boomstick version like? I'll go check it out from a shopping
site or something, but is this worth getting?
Anyways my friend's actually got a version with the s-mart ending, but has
the line "I ain't that good" in it. I'll have to borrow his tape and
rewatch it. He recorded it off TV btw.
<=[BC]=>
the boomstick's a two disc set with both the theatrical and "bootleg"
director's cuts (15 minutes difference, and the endings are radically
different), anamorphic 1.66 transfers, a making of featurette,
commentary on the director cut from the Raimi brothers and Bruce
Campbell.
It's actually listed, if you're searching, as Bruce Campbell vs. Army
of Darkness: Boomstick Edition

He probably taped it from the Sci-Fi channel. I think the version they
show is the theatrical version with a few of the alternate/deleted
scenes added.
If you want both versions get the Boomstick Edition. The theatrical
version is THX approved. Great transfer. The director's cut however is
not as good looking. There's some aliasing (jagged lines) and
blurriness. It looks like they used a video copy for the transfer
instead of film. It's not unwatchable though. The director's
commentary is pretty funny too.

There is also the original Limited Edition 2-disc set. Basically all
subsequent releases from Anchor Bay have been repackages of the some two
discs from the LE, either released as single discs (Director's Cut, The
Official Bootleg) or as a "new" 2-disc set as in the Boomstick Edition. The
content is still the same.
The only really new thing in this area is the recent Asian release by MGM of
the director's cut. This has a vastly improved transfer compared to the old
(and repackaged) Anchor Bay releases.

Do not get the MGM Region 3 DVD for Army of Darkness (which is THE BEST
TRANSFER EVER) unless you live in Hong Kong or have a region free player.

There are several versions of Army of Darkness:
The US Theatrical Cut
The International Theatrical Cut
The Original Director's Cut
The Sci-fi Channel Cut
The Sci-fi Channel cut was similar to the International
cut, but with the US ending. The International cut is
different from all the other cuts, it even includes some
scenes not in the Director's cut. However, the
International cut has never been released on DVD,
just overseas on VHS and LD.

A much better version of the Director's Cut is out in R3. It has
5.1 surround sound and a great image. The R3 DVD was
produced and released by MGM, who own the international
video rights to the film.

1)The Universal disc. Barebones and non-anamorphic
I believe. Had the original poster art though.
2)The 2-disc Limited Edition.
- The first disc is the theatrical release, anamorphic
with DD5.1 sound. The original ending is included
as an extra, as well as a behind-the-scenes documentary.
- The 2nd disc is the "Original Director's Cut," with
scenes taken from a sub-par print. Also includes 4
scenes still not in either cut,as well as a
full-length Commentary with Sam Raimi and Bruce
Campbell. Ivan Raimi joins them latter in the track.
Also features storyboards as a PIP shown during the
feature.
This was released in a limited run of 30,000 in the US,
and a smaller run of 4,000 in Canada. This is the only
other release that has the original poster art.
3)The Theatrical DVD.
The exact same as disc one of the above LE. Released at the
same time as the LE, this was what Anchor Bay intended to
be it's permanent release.
The cover art for this is a crappy montage of movie scenes.
4)The Limited Edition "Director's Cut" 1-disc DVD
The exact same as disc two of the original 2-disc LE.
This was released several months later to help abate
demand for the now OOP 2-disc. This release was limited
to 40,000 copies in the US. The cover art is alternate
artwork of Ash torso-up with arms outstretched.
5)The "Bootleg" DVD
The exact same as disc two of the original 2-disc LE,
and of the other LE. Released because the second LE
release still didn't abate demand for the Director's
Cut disc. Anchor Bay kept this one in print.
The cover art replicates a brown-paper wrapper
covering up the 1-disc LE art.
6)The "Boomstick" 2-disc DVD
This is an exact re-release of the original LE
(release #2), apparently because of demand for
both discs in a 2-disc package.
The cover art is PhotoShop Hell.
Note that all but the first DVD are Anchor Bay releases.
AB clearly underestimated demand for the Director's Cut,
and have been making amends ever since. Apparently AB
has kept the original poster art (the best) limited to
the original LE as a way to pacify those who forked over
for what they thought was gonna be a limited release.

The extras contained on the Region 3 disc are exactly the same as the
Directors Cut version from AB R1. If you want to have a superior version of
the film (The DC aside from two spots), then look for the Region 3 version
of AOD:DC. You will not be displeased. But make sure that your DVD player is
region free capable.

Hmmmm, is the sci-fi channel cut availible on DVD? Or is it coming out?
I've been quite a few different versions listed on a few shopping sites,
but most of them seems to be the same versions rereleased.

TV edits of films hardly ever are put on DVD. The only two
edits out on DVD are the US theatrical and Original Director's
Cut*. It's possible the International Cut may appear on DVD,
but it seems unlikely. The Director's Cut seems to have supplanted
it, especially since the DC has a commentary track to accompany it.
While the International Cut has a few scenes not in the DC, the
DVDs for the DC contain separate deleted scenes, including those
found only in the International Cut.

*A bit of a lie. The R3 DVD has the Director's Cut, but with a
2 sec. shot of Evil Ash ripping Sheila's blouse. In all other
aspects it's the Director's Cut.

"Good, Bad, I'm the one with the gun" was a classic line, I thought. I
never understood why that didn't make the director's cut.

"Zed's dead, baby. Zed's dead."
The DVD is of the director's *original* cut, and not
a director's final cut.

When i bought my first DVD-ROM i also went searching for my first DVD.
I ended up getting the 2 disk Army Of Darkness LE because it was the
only one listed on Chapters.ca. It was on sale, and i had an internet
coupon, so i ended up paying all of $15CAN after taxes and shipping.
I still laugh at this and am glad i decided to start my DVD collection
at that precise time. I only found out it was LE when that next
director's cut disk was released. Wish i'd known at the time, i would
have bought more.
Kevin
From what I remember on the commentary track, the "I'm the guy with the gun"
was added later.
>I think it's been covered here before, but which is the best version of
Actually the best quality version of this film is the MGM Region 3.
It surpasses any of those Anchor Bay releases.... BIG TIME!!!
Anamorphic, Great Transfer, Great Sound... Glad I bought this one!
Just my 2 cents!
Oh and i forgot, it's UNCUT unlike the Anchor Bay releases...
If you mean uncut as in "containing every scene filmed for
the movie," then you're wrong. If you mean uncut as
in "contains 2 secs of footage not in the AB director's
cut DVD," then you're correct.
However, 'uncut' is a bit of a misnomer in any case.
The AB director's cut is the only one that we know
had director's approval, and it seems unlikely that
AB would've cut this short scene against his wishes.
More likely, MGM added the footage without
Sam Raimi's approval, or even knowledge.
The R3 is still the director's cut DVD to get, but
because of the image and sound, not because it's
"uncut."

Actually, the next director's cut disc was _also_ LE (the single disc, with
Muscle Man Ash on the front). I forget the production run number, but I
think it was 40,000, and each copy is numbered.

Damn, everytime I try this link my browser crashes...
Anyways anyone knows where I can order this?

Overseas sites:

Or order domestically:

http://www.pokerindustries.com/poker.store?page=item&sku=AODIMP-DVD
I've ordered from all of these places previously, and have had good
experiences with each. I'd recommend DDDhouse because it
probably has the best overall price.

Anchor Bay has released the two disc R1 Boomstick Edition as "Army of
Darkness - The Evil Dead 3" in the UK.
You can buy it here:

I don't know whether MGM's version of the director's cut will be available
anywhere else than in region 3.
