Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this, but I am due to travel abroad
(lucky me!) and I will be taking my digital camcorder with me.
The question is - can I safely take allow my DV tapes to go through the
scanners at customs without them being damaged and/or losing all the film I
have shot?
What is the safest way of doing this?

They should be fine going through the scanners, but if you're really worried
you can request they be examined manually. Put them in a clear plastic bag &
be prepared to play them for security if asked (so no shots of the wife
coming out of the shower, unless you want a divorce!). Bear in mind that
security can insist on scanning the tapes without liability for any damage
incurred.

I've been all over the place with my DV cam and always put it through the
scanners. Never had a problem. If you travel to some backwards country with
old scanners though, there could be a problem.

If domestic I'd mail them to myself and avoid the risk; they are still
magnetic media. I even do that for photographic film, since I don't want to
risk ruining photos I paid big money for a nice camera to shoot.
