This happens with Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, SolidWorks, and
a few other applications. It doesn't happen with ProEngineer,
FrameMaker, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
The other weird thing is that this started happening awhile back with
my old work computer. This computer was completely replaced, and it is
still occurring. My desktop and user profiles were all reinstalled on
the new computer.
I run UltraMon for a dual-monitor configuration. I've turned this
utility off, and I still get the problem.
Any help would be appreciated.
How about posting only to appropiate groups?
I've found that there are plenty of computer experts that are also
experts in other subjects. I am casting a wide net, in the hope that
someone in one of the groups will be able to help me. In other words,
just because this is x-posted, doesn't mean I'm trying to be malicious.
How about getting a real operating system?

Yeah, it would be nice if they'd let me run OS X on a mac.
Unfortunately, I don't get to choose my OS, at my place of business.
You need more RAM and cache memory or both. Check hard drive and make sure
it's not full. Cleanup your temp files, run defrag, increase ramdisk size.

Someone told me that there may be a short between the keyboard and the
chair. I'm checking that one out now.
There's about 95 GB remaining of free space on the hard drive. I clean
up the temp files all the time with CCleaner. I have 4 GB of physical
memory installed. Given the amount of applications I run
simultaneously, this should be more than adequate. Or, it has been up
until this started. I changed the virtual memory setting to "system
managed." It was 2045, or something like that.
When I start Excel, it takes about 1 1/2 minutes for it to be displayed. In
my case it's the virus program checking it first. Same with IE, word, etc.
It's not hung if it finally appears, it's just taking its sweet time. Virus
program and or Google desktop or google anthing will cause it too.
Are you using Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Protection by any chance?
Nope, Sophos corporate version.
When you start something go to the task master first and process and see
what's using all your resources.....That'll be the culprit.

Leopard, Vista...7?
1. Open Task Manager. All programs running, all process running.
Nothing unusual taking up resources. Leave Task Manager open.
2. Open Adobe Illustrator. It hangs like normal.
3. Illustrator process shows running; Task Manager shows Illustrator
not responding.
4. Close Task Manager. Illustrator still hanging in background.
5. Hit Ctrl-Alt-Del bringing up Windows Security dialog box.
6. Hit the Cancel button (I don't even open Task Manager).
7. Illustrator running fine when window redisplayed.
Hmm, What kinda PC?
HP XW4600 Workstation
Look for ctfmon.exe, it's a spyware virus and hard to remove. It can
cause severe lagging issues
According to Microsoft, it's a service they install for alternative
language/input support for XP. It can cause severe lagging issues,
like you suggest. It can be turned off. I'm going to try that and see
if it helps.
I've also read that if I have a corrupt font installed, this may also
be causing these applications to hang when they try to load a
corrupted font set.
Have you tried disabling Hyperthreading?
Looked for it in the BIOS setup. Didn't see this option anywhere. All
I see is something called "Multi-processor support" enable/disable.
Figured I didn't want to do that. Supposedly, there should have been
the option under Advanced Power Options; but, it wasn't there.
It's in the BIOS.
If you don't have an Intel CPU, you won't have Hyperthreading.
Uh uh. No No No.
Folks, if it's not too much trouble could you please remove
sci.anthropology.paleo from the Newsgroups list when replying to
this thread, as it's completely off-topic & no one here really
has any interest in contributing to it. Thanks...

What AV are you running? Some of them will stop you in your tracks, and need
to be set up to exclude trusted programs and directories.
You're welcome.
Dam-bit. I'll bet this is it.

GET A LIFE dildo brain...
Thanks for reminding me about this.
Turns out, it may be my user profile that is corrupted, so I'm going
to rebuild that. I found this out when an IT support person was
remotely logged into my system to install a new application. I told
him to watch something to see if he knew what it was. While he was
logged into my system remotely, using a remote user profile, these
applications launched perfectly. When he logged out, they would hang
again.
