Is it that the burner is reaching the end of its life or do I have other
problems?
Help/advice appreciated, John.

I've had about 3 or 4 CD or DVD burners fail over the years, and none
of them first started making coasters. They just stopped working at
all, every one of them, (including the damn one in my Thinkpad
notebook, which would cost a fortune to replace.)
Have you confirmed the same experience with different media?

IMHO I'd say you've reached the end of service life. I've gone
through 4 sets of DVD burners (2 identical setups) and every time, I
would get gradual failures. Either at the end of the burn from Nero
or when I do a validation play back - problems are often at the last
track/end of the disk. I usually buy burners that are on special at
newegg.com and these are less than $30 US.
If you want to squeeze more life out of the burner, try a lower speed.
