For others that have the same issue:
I uninstalled Nero7 again and then ran the Clean tool from
http://ww2.nero.com/nero7/eng/General_CleanTool.html . Rebooted ,
installed the UPDATED version from Nero.com using MY serial number
(otherwise its a demo version). The update button STILL doesn't do what
you would think ( Live LiveUpdate on Norton, I expected it to fetch and
update everything vs taking me to the page and having ME click on each
and download each file ( how do I know which one's I neeed ? - and then
unzip/install it/ then restart the app ... ) Then I noticed that I still
had no help files, I got this message:
Dear User,
In order to keep the size of the download file small, help and manual
files have been excluded from this version. You can download help and
manual files in your own language from:
http://www.nero.com/link.php?topic_id=7070&language=ENU

The update was 122mb and had no help files due to size ! Tell me that
when I'm getting the first file !

So I went there , downloaded / unzipped the help file (13mb) - ran it as
instructed -

1.. Right-click the CHM file, and then click Properties.
2.. Click Unblock.
3.. Double-click the .chm file to open the file.
thinking it would THEN be integrated into the program - WRONG

THEY ended up in the wrong folder ( even though I browsed to the
correct folder, it then makes a subfolder - which it didn't tell me ) -
I found the new subfolders by browsing to the Nero folder and then moved
the new files to the correct folders - THEN Help worked.

Everything is now working - but what a fiasco !

I tried that - and you're right it did remember my s/n - but it didn't
work for me. Only after I ran the cleaner did it "forget" my info and
then after a new install it started working. I wrote them ( Nero.com)
a nasty note in the feedback section stating that thery need to update
that page with the "how-to's" since everyone there would be doing the
same thing. It's crazy - I dload a 122mb file and it's missing the help
files - cuz they are too big ? TELL ME THAT UPFRONT and I'll d'load them
while I'm there - at the same time. It's only "too big" if I'm on a
dialup - and if I am ,122mb will take me a week ! Give me a link on the
page that states " Download all updates? " and let it rip.

Its not a bug unlike CDs DVDs have to be burned at their coded speed. 4X,
4X, 8X, 8X, etc. When you don't have a disc in Nero shows Max because it
can't read the speed code from the disc since there is no disc. If you want
to burn at slower speeds by slower speed rated discs.

Has anyone updated Nero 7 ?

I've been trying to burn a Vista DVD at less than max speed and Nero can't
do it. If I select the file without a blank DVD in there, the default is
MAXIMUM, but I can choose 1x,2x, etc from a dropdown. BUT as soon as I put
in a DVD, the speed changes to the blank DVD speed ( I put in a 4X DVD and
it changes to 4x ) Anyone else been here?

In case a known bug, I selected ProductUpdate from Nero start menu and it
goes to Nero for updates - installs - same thing. I then went thru registry
(shoulda done this first) and I see:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ahead\Nero Fast CD-DVD Burning Plug-in : maybe
THAT's my problem.

So I went to control panel to CHANGE Nero and I see 2 installs ( mine and
the online one ?)
Would have been nice to know that it's gonna use another 350mb - why not
uninstall the first version - like most others companies do after a
successful install of the update ?
I can't change the first,

so I CHANGE the second, unclick most items but Nero Burning Rom ( that's all
I use) - it does so .
Great - start-programs- nero - and ... everything is still there ! ( from
the install that I "couldn't mess with" ?)

So NOW I have to REMOVE the latest ? Why give me a CHANGE option ? Will the
"first one" still work ? If so, then how to update it AND only have one
instance of it appear ? Have to uninstall IT too ? and then download a
trial and use my serial number ? What a nuisance !

I tried it - same thing.
Since I have the latest updates, maybe I already had that in there. The
description reads:
It modifies Nero so that the speeds supported by the recorder can no
longer be calculated dynamically but are derived from a table in the
burner's firmware. Nero should now, at the latest, display all speeds
supported by the burner provided that there is no recordable CD in the
burner.

Mine did that (display all possible) prior to trying the reg hack. It's
when I put the blank DVD in there that it goes to 4x only.
Thanks for the effort
