I have a Dell that came with the Hitachi GD-5000 drive. It works great with
regular production DVDs... but when I try to play a DVD-R, the disk is not
recognized. I know that the specs for the GD 5000 says it can read DVD-Rs.
Does anybody have any ideas?

TIA.

It might be the method used to write the disk or the media itself.
Occasionally a firmware upgrade can fix the problem.

I can take the same DVD-R and play it in any of a number of other DVD
players, both in PCs and not. I tried to do a firware upgrade, but the
indication was that I already had the latest.

Yes, the GD 5000 can read DVD R-media. However, it can only
read DVD-R media with a capacity of 3.95GB. The current
industry standard for DVD-R media is 4.7GB. This is because
the GD 5000 was created before the DVD Consortium agreed
upon a 4.7GB standard. Please check the size of your DVD-R
disc, if it's larger than 3.95GB then that's the problem.
