We're pleased that you are pleased. Although our HD picture is primarily an
upconversion of the 480 line picture you see on Channel 4, it is digital
throughout our plant and you can see the difference, particularly anything
originating in our studios. Syndicated programming on the other hand leaves
much to be desired.
While true HD material is limited to Leno and Friday Night Videos with Rita
Sever, we expect to have more HD material available from the Network in
Prime Time next year. We may be covering the Inauguration in HDTV, if the
necessary arrangements can be completed in time.
The contrast between Channel 48 (WRC-DT) and satellite is significant.
Channel 48 delivers 19.4 Megabits per second and the satellites typically
deliver less than 2 Mbps, a 10:1 difference, which makes the compression
artifacts quite noticeable. DirecTv has their feed from our Master Control
Room sent by optical fiber to Los Angeles where it is uplinked to their
satellite(s). At the moment, Dish Net is taking an "off-air" feed from us
until their fiber is in place later this month. While both will have access
to "clear as glass" video and audio, they heavily compress it for delivery
with all of the other channels via satellite.
I hope that helps to explain why you see those differences.

Just got a Dish 6000 receiver with an 8VSB OTA Module.
I was surprised how much better your WRC-DT picture looked then anything
coming off the Satellite.
Are you folks aware of what a competitive advantage that gives you. I'm
watching your shows just to see the great picture.

BTW: I got the Dish 6000 w/8VSB for only $198 (must sign-up for Dish
Service). That's a lot cheaper then the DTC-100. They are selling them as
fast as they make them. Point is you're going to be getting more 'DT'
viewers soon.

after the Conan O'Brien shown. I'm watching it now. I just noticed a short while
ago that it was in high definition. It was a
pleasant surprise.
I'm new to HTDV. I bought an RCA 38" HDTV back in September, primarily to view
DVD's. I was surprised how easy it is to
receive broadcast DTV with just rabbit ears. I'm still debating whether to get an
outdoor antenna. After watching HDTV, it's
difficult to watch regular tv. So I purchased the RCA DTC 100. I would like to
eventually hook it to HD widescreen monitor.
But I can't use (or afford!) another 38" HDTV. I'd like something with the same
height as a 27" 4:3 monitor but widescreen.
Right now I'm just using a 20" RCA 4:3 tv. Still, it's remarkable hw good the
digital images look on just a conventional tv.
BTW, the RCA 38" is spectacular.
One other thing. I would like to view VGA output from a computer (laptop) on the
HDTV. It has component inputs though. I've
tried using the RCA product that goes from VGA to component (made for the DTC 100
to allow connection to monitors with
only component inputs) but it did not appear to work. The laptop had an 800 x 600
screen so I thought it should work. Any
ideas?
