Santa Rosa Taco Shop
2201 S Maryland Parkway
A tiny dive. 24 hours. Great food. Beloved by at least one banjo
player who stops there late Thursday nights.

I would also add any of the "Michoacan" restaurants, Bonito Michoacan, Lindo
Michoacan, another in Henderson, I think.

Garduno's at the Palms. Great margaritas, atmosphere and cute
waitresses to boot.

Willy and Jose's at Sams Town.

Here here, Lindo Michoacan used to get a lot of press around here a few
years ago so I tried it (before the fire) and while they did have some
unusual items on the menu, the food wasn't any better than any other hole in
the wall Mexican joint anywhere else, of course that's not accounting for
personal taste...

I love Garduño's. Glad to see you recommend it. Some people get so
snobbish about Mexican food. Stop kicking the waitresses, BEENER.

It is always hard to recommend a restaurant as tastes vary so much
but....the best Mexican food I have ever had in LV was at Viva
Mercado on W. Flamingo.
YMMV,

It's pretty good Mexican food. There are about 5 of 'em here in
Albquerque and they all have great food and perfect margaritas.

Amazing. Mexican food is one of the cheapest foods to make next to
Italian food. When you get all fancy with Mexican food it diminishes
the quality. Just compare Border Grill with Garduno's. Same type of
food but BG does all the fancy stuff and you pay more for inferior
food. Just gimme some damn fajitas, guacamole dip and a kick ass
maggie and I'll be a happy camper.

I think you misspelt licking. :>)

Well, EE, that all depends on what you call Italian. If either opening a
jar of store bought sauce or frying a pound of ground beef, adding some
tomato sauce and spices and letting that simmer and then dumping that over
cooked spaghetti is your idea of Italian food, then yes, it is very
inexpensive to make. But that's not my idea of Italian, and I have a
feeling that it's not yours, either.
As an example, two weeks ago, I cooked an Italian dinner for 6. It wasn't
anything elaborate--my spaghetti sauce had meatballs, sausage and some
steaks which were added so they could disintegrate as the sauce cooked
making it a very meaty sauce. I could have made lasagna or manicotti (which
would have driven up the cost another $15 or $20 dollars) but kept it simple
and just cooked up 2 lbs of cut macaroni. In this case it was Rotelle.
When I made the sauce, by the time I had all of the meat in the pot and
about a gallon of actual spaghetti sauce (two large cans of Progresso
crushed tomatoes and a number of cans of tomato paste along with water, lots
of fresh basil and other spices), my cousin's 8 quart pot was filled to the
brim. (At home, I normally use a 10 quart pot and then add even more meat.
Pork neckbones especially add great flavor to the sauce. I couldn't find
them here.)
Anyway, this wasn't that elaborate of a dinner. For pupus (appetizers in
Hawaiian), we kept it simple with just shrimp cocktail, cashews and some
olives that were stuffed with feta cheese. Then we had our dinner--the
pasta and sauce with plenty of meatballs and sausage to go around, garlic
bread and a great Italian salad with salad greens, green onions, tomatoes,
avocados, black olives, grated mozzerella, and my own special dressing.
Also can't forget the imported parmagiano-reggiano cheese that costs over
$18 a pound that I freely use when mixing my meatballs and of course to go
on the pasta when it is served. We went through about 3/4th pound of that.
Oh, and during the course of the night, the 6 of us drank almost 2 bottles
of wine and maybe a few sodas. We cheated on dessert and my cousin picked
up a cake at the store and served that with fresh brewed Kona coffee.
The price to do all of this: well over $200.00. When I got home from the
grocery store and my cousin saw everything I had bought to make the dinner
happen, his response was, "All this for just one dinner???" I think I used
everything I bought for the dinner except that I had four 6 ounce cans of
tomato paste left over.
Of course this is Maui, and I estimate that I could have done the same meal
for probably $160 to $170 were I home in California. But still, I wouldn't
call that an inexpensive dinner. Years ago, yes. But the price of meat
especially has risen so much. I remember when I was a kid it was fairly
inexpensive to do a dinner similar to the above. When I grew up, almost
every Sunday morning, I was awoken by the aroma of meatballs frying. Back
then, it was all very affordable and it was a meal my mom usually cooked
weekly. Sadly, those days are long gone.
Of course restaurants tend to skimp on both ingredients and cooking time.
As a rule, I won't order anything with a red sauce at ANY Italian restaurant
as they just don't have the time required to make it truly great. (I always
cook my sauce for a minimum of 4 hours and always make it at least one day
ahead as it never tastes right the day it's cooked.) White sauces are much
easier and quicker to make, and much less expensive to prepare, too. Veal
dishes are another story altogether.
Now I'm hungry. So, when are you coming for dinner?? :>)
All the best,
Donna
Posole, BEENER. Don' t forget the posole. Garduño's at the Palms
used to have it, but haven't seen it for a while. I do a lot of
cooking but can't seem to get it right.
And speaking of Albuquerque, whatever happened to Poncho's Buffet on
Central? Loved their chili rellenos.

There is some KILLER posole at the Barelas Coffee House here in ABQ.
Don't really know where to get it in LV but I bet Lindo Michoacan has
some.

It's a very difficult dish to do.

Thanks for making me swallow my food and nearly choking me to death for
that comment. PONCHO'S BUFFET????????? Are you KIDDING me? That's
the equivalent of going to the 7/11 to get a killer burrito. You want
good chile rellenos, go to Casa Benavidez.
Now if I can just get this food out of my throat before I rupture my
esophagus. :>)

See, BEENER, Mexican food snobbery. While I've never had a 7-11
burrito, I do like their cream cheese taquitos..with a diet Pepsi
slurpee of course.
Thirty years ago, we would drive the 140 miles from Gallup just to eat
at Poncho's. Haven't been there in years, but I was driving down
Central last summer and couldn't spot it.

I think they put an artificial addictive substance into the food to
keep 'em coming.

Snoberry? Moi? Sir, I have worked with Wolfgang Puck in California
and one of the greatest Master Sommeliers in Las Vegas. What could
possibly give you the preposterous and boldly insipid idea that I am a
food snob? :>)

Served by Abu.

What a waste of gasoline. Next time go to Los Cuates.
And I am sorry that you were ever in Gallup.

I don't know if it's there anymore.
Ever stop at any of the nice places along Central between Carlisle and
Girard in Nob Hill? That's my hangout. Always an interesting crowd in
some of the places in Nob Hill. Ever been to O'Neill's Pub? That
place was a riot. Now it's called Sig's. Not as fun as O'Niell's but
they have great fish & chips and a $2.50 happy hour where they serve
Hazed 'N Infused beer on tap.
It's my local watering hole. Come by and wake me up from my drunken
stupor the next time you are travelling this way.
--EE--
HA. my generation didn't worry about wasting gas, BEENER. Gas was
.25/gal. That's why your generation is paying $3.
We found Gallup enchanting, lots of good people, great scenery and
just an Arizona away from Las Vegas.
