I think the new name is very nice. I like it. In the 3 or 4 times that I
stayed at the old "barbary Coast", I did not see one pirate, anywhere in the
place. How come?
Didn't see a pirate ship either. I saw an old geezer one time with a beard
and a patch over one eye, but hey...thats vegas.

Because it referred to Victorian-period San Francisco, known as the
Barbary Coast. And it evoked that elegance quite well.

Bill Harrah, casino pioneer, legendary car collector and would
probably be really pissed at what his name is attached to these days.

like that.

Ok, that name sucks bigtime.
Is Bill the famous Mr. Bill for Saturday Night Live?

I can't figure out why they have to rename everything anyway. Like
the Stardust...what name recognition does Echelon have? (I may be
bitter since Echelon is a company I lost some bucks on during the tech
crash.) Rebuild it if need be--is anyone really going to miss those
old, beat-up motel rooms in the parking lot?-- but there is no way
Vegas-travelers are not going to be more excited about a shiny new
"Stardust" rather than something called Echelon Place. That's so
generic sounding. I know a new place would be different but I sure
wish they would leave the name alone.

Unfortunately, one of the few that was rebuilt and kept the name was
Aladdin, but what horrible timing that was with the various Iraq wars
and 911 and all. One of the last times I was in there it looked like
their security staff got their uniforms from Saddam's personal guard
and the whole place had the feel of an Iraqi village all purtied up.
Still, I was glad that they didn't give it some quasi-tech generic
sounding name.

Now Barbary Coast. Although it's always been one of my favorite
places to stay and gamble, the name doesn't have quite the same
nostalgic charm as Dunes, Sands, Stardust and those do to me, and at
least Bill's Gamblin Hall is a name that sounds "Vegas-ie", although
to me it sounds like one of the dingy bars a couple miles off the
strip with functional spittoons and the floors a little sticky around
them. But I'm more concerned about the changes to the casino.
Barbary was one of the last of the LV strip places to offer $5 pai
gow...although I haven't been in for awhile so maybe that's already
changed. I always found it a comfortable place to gamble, not as
trendy as the flashy, big-money places around it. I've never felt
underdressed there. Actually I'm surprised it's still standing and
not torn down to build something with more sizzle and appeal to the
California (barely) 20-somethings with all their throw-away $$$$. If
they keep the place reasonably the same, I can live with the name
change. And hopefully they'll keep the good lounge acts too! We'll
see.

Sorry for the rant and ramble. I do that.

I believe if there is any sanity in the world, the name Echelon will
be gone by the time it opens - the way Le Reve was gone by the time
Wynn opened. Sadly, I think the Aladdin has made it tabu to keep a mid-
level property name after a rebuilding, so Stardust is out. If we
stick to naming casinos after founders, I'm OK with "Sammy Boyd's
Bigass Casino" for a name.

Actually it could be named "Jackie's Gambling Hall" or "El Cortez
South".

And hopefully Harrah's will leave it alone and not Disney-fy it. It
reminds me of Main Street Station, which is a good thing.

Not very original though, they already have a Bill's in Stateline
(South Lake Tahoe).

In keeping with Harrah's rip-off gambling, hotel, comps, etc policies
it should be renamed "The Sting" with a theme based on that movie.
