Hello to all my AVLV friends. I am checking in after my prolonged
absence to say that I hope everything is going well for almost all of
you, and to catch you up on a few things.

I posted a while back that my last few trips, Vegas just wasn't doing
it for me like in the past. That, for better or worse, hasn't really
changed. I flirted with the idea of making a surprise appearance at
Sporgy in a couple of weeks, but I have a previous obligation that
weekend and will be unable to make it.

For the first time in years, I have no Vegas trip planned and really
no plans for one. I'll probably make it in Joone, but that will very
likely be my next trip out. Matt's Soiree had also kind of run its
course, and will be missed, but the events that I understand will take
place in place of the Soiree sound really good, and everybody involved
is good people.

As George Leppla correctly posted, I am filling my gambling jones by
traveling somewhat regularly to New Orleans, where Harrah's is
treating me very nicely for my play. NOLA is a great getaway, since I
can drive there, am generously comped, and the 9/6 JOB is relatively
plentiful in the casino. The diamond lounge is a nice bonus, and
pretty much means I never pay for a drink down there. The food is
great (as George can tell you) and most of it is comped (as George can
also tell you.) One nice thing is that many local restaurants have an
agreement with Harrahs to accept comp slips as payment... we have been
living it up!

I may return to the group after the election. In my limited lurking
here, I have been really turned off by some of what I have seen of
what passes for political "discourse." Unfortunately, many people
today seem to think simplistic labeling of groups and name-calling and
is political discussion. It's not, and this group has suffered
because of the above. I might make a post outlining my thoughts on
the election. Then again I might not.

Hope to see most of you in Joone.

Good to hear from you, Andrew.

However, how can you stand idly by & let Boyd's stock suffer like that? How
are they ever to recover without your stays @ MSS every 4 months? I think
you're being very selfish, Andrew.

Hi Andrew,

I am thanking you... later. Finally saw Mac King (I think you were the
first one to suggest the show to me a couple of years ago) and had a great
time. What a wondeful show and what a gracious person he was as he signed
stuff for the audience after.

Glad NOLA is working out for you. You're missed around here.

And the political insults this year are an improvement over what went on
here in 2004. Only 8 more days until the wailing and gnashing of teeth.
That'll last about a month, so I'd imagine things will get back to normal
here around Christmas time.

Andrew,

I empathasize with your feelings about Las Vegas. It took a lot of
convincing to get me to come out to Sporgy this year. I don't know what it
is. Maybe it's that Las Vegas no longer values my business like it once did,
or that there are better things to see than re-visiting for the 25th or 30th
time (who keeps track?). In the end, my main reason for coming out now is
to visit with people I like (no, love) more than visiting Las Vegas. I never
thought I'd say that, but this feeling was already starting to seep in
during last year's Sporgy.

In any case, I will be coming out in Joone, but only to see the great folks
I missed out on this past year.

Andrew,
Miss having the chance to, as Dennis Miller says, "chat you up." Looks like
I too may not make it to Vegas until Joone, but who knows.

I did stop in and spend 30 minutes playing slots at Harrah's New Orleans the
other day....that's what it takes to park free in their parking garage.
Lost $8, which is about what parking would have cost anyway. Found a nice
bank of nickel VP and the overall vibe of the casino was not so bad. I'd
still rather go over to Gulfport/Biloxi. I did enough of New Orleans/French
Quarter during my college days (and the years right after).

As for politics, I'm waiting for your endorsement. I already know who it
is, and won't give it away.

You and me both re---the political rhetoric. I have largely stayed out of
that fray for the reasons you state. The back and forth can become
disgusting and mean.

I don't share entirely share your views of Vegas, but am slowly getting
there.

Hope to see you in Joone.

I thought maybe I'd get sick of Las Vegas and the last couple of trip I've
taken some savage beatings in the casinos. However, now when I go to Las
Vegas, there are friends to meet there that I have fun with. After I've
been home for about a month, I get the "fever" again.

It's not the same as before, not worse, but it is different. The only thing
worse in Las Vegas for me over the years has been the Harrahization of the
Strip & the careless destruction of the North Strip. You know, how they
tore down profitable, regular Joe casinos to build megaresorts that now may
never get built due to shortsighted greed. You think Boyd kind of wishes it
still had the Stardust raking in money?

We miss most of you too, Andrew in Alabama. Your enthusiastic
anticipation of Las Vegas trips has always been what AVLV is all about.
But I certainly understand and share a lot of your feelings about Las
Vegas and the direction discussion has gone in this group. Somewhere along

Indeed, Margaret Fine. Many of us have a lot to thank Andrew for and I
hope it's not too late. I am planning my first stay at MSS and will be
googling Andrew's posts. Thanks in advance, Andrew.

On a thankful later related note. I would like to thank George L for his
recommendation of West St. Cafe in Bar Harbor. The lobster roll, chowdah

They will get built.

That is another bet you will lose.

Sorry Cam, but you remind me of the guys I knew in the later 80's when
places like Silver Slipper and other old dumps were being considered for
removal. They cried when they couldn't get the 50 cent drink with the
umbrella in it anymore.

Looking a mid strip now is truly amazing and all the construction going on
at south strip will be wonderful when complete.

Bottom line Cam, is I am not a socialist. If you want to "spread the
wealth" let the STRIP be the first place to do it. The hotels and casinos
are still taxed less than other states. Let the tourists pay the tab--not
us.

I have a huge political forum that many of my friends have participated in
since the fall of last year.

Our opinions and exchanges get rough and heated, but they never get
personal. We do not name call or insult each other. When it looks like
they can get personal, they get reviewed first and suggestions are made.

My list of participants covers every known political spectrum: liberals,
conservatives, moderates, democrats, republicans, independents, religious
right, Christians, Buddhist, Jewish, agnostic, atheists, social
progressive, gay, straight and even "I don't know what I am". It is amazing
to read how people feel abut each and every issue individually and sometimes
it surprises me who takes what position.

Even AVLV members (not to be named here) have participated in it. You
nailed it on the head. We do not act like 10 year olds. I really doubt
anyone has changed anyone else's opinion much in the past year, but we have
educated each other greatly. We all understand the issues that Americans
are facing and we are all going to VOTE.

We are all patriots (even the "anarchists" in the group) and all love our
country. That is why we voice our opinions. Interestingly enough, the
heaviest debate was between the Hillary and Obama participants than it has
been with McCain vs Obama.

Wednesday, I will distribute an email asking for two things: Who are you
voting for, and who do you think will WIN the election. We have spent the
past year on the Why and will close debate.

If you would like to contribute and also learn what other people say, send
me your response at mike...@hotmail.com.

I think this town's "shine" has been replaced by "the grind" --- which
probably won't help in regaining 'that lovin' feeling'. The weight on
the industry is palpable to everyone involved and it's hard to pull off
a cheery feeling when you know what's going on in the backroom (ex:
Harrah's lost 1,500 last week, or past couple of weeks) --- or
boardroom. Things have to be set to kill just to cover the monthly bond
payment and that takes a lot of the fun out of things. There's also the
ill will (lost 'lovin' feeling') on our side of the pit and that
translates to a little bit less of a good time being had. Yes, I've read
how some here say they're seeing record crowds, or big crowds --- but I
can tell you that they're a different and more subdued crowd.

I know that Cam pines for the old days, the class operators --- and me
the mob. But I really think that what you and others are feeling is what
the town's become. As sad as that might be.

The plan to boost room tax by around 3% MORE will have a similar effect.
Yup, folks won't feel the pinch until they check out. That hotel bill
will have even more of a shock- remember that they add in "resort fees,"
"internet fees," "calling fees," "towel fees," and about every other
"fee" they can come up with AFTER the basic room price now. In the
short run, people will still gamble and have fun, but then when it comes
to planning the next visit, they'll think of all those fees and taxes,
the long hauling by cabbies, assaults by porn slappers and the folk with
their hands out for tips and might reconsider or postpone the next trip.
The trend of turning casinos inward, rather than having gifts or
attractions to the street, certainly has a bad cooling effect on the
tourist as well, IMHO.

Like you said, Tom, the lovin' feeling will be a bit less. There isn't
just a single reason- it's the accumulation of little stab wounds that
is doing in the industry.

Nonny:

I am not sure that is really true.

I lived in Miami, NYC and Los Angeles. All three cities are major tourist
cities and while taxation seems to draw a temporary whine or complaint, it
seldom lasts long and everybody moves on.

Tourist tax in Miami and NY were the most annoying but everyone pays them.
It is like cigarette tax. Ok, some do 'quit' but most smokers complain for
a week and then adjust. Our out of town guest was a smoker and even though
she was a 'polite' smoker, she must have smoked about 25-30 cigarettes a
day. Even buying them by the carton at the Indian Stores (which she thought
was a hell of a bargain compared to Detroit) she didn't blink at the cost.

Even though she stayed with us for a week (and we signed her up for every
card and freebee) she still managed to drop about $700 in gambling and
thought nothing of it. (Like my GF, she has got bucks.)

In NY I got fleeced good at the hotel and eating in the city is outrageous
Even though Dad and I split the bill (he refuses to stay with family and
worships his privacy) it was over $1400 for the hotel (midtown), meals and
transportation. Dad is "too rich" and too old (ok he turned 76 on 10/24) to
use the subway so we used cabs everywhere. Most say we got off cheap.
Perhaps tourists are more economy minded but business travelers seem to care
less. JFK was as crowded as hell both coming and leaving.

He refused to let me rent a car to go to Long Island, so other than family
taking us to NJ to bury my Aunt, he just paid the family for gas and meals
everywhere we went. Now that my Aunt (the eldest) has passed he is last of
that generation. He is the baby of the four children and is the most
successful. Car rental in Manhattan is ridiculous too but he was afraid to
even let ME drive! I wanted to go to the Bronx which almost made him shit!

Nonny, trust me, Las Vegas is still a huge bargain. And all my NJ family
told me they cannot stand Atlantic City. ("So you live in Vegas all the
time now---you lucky SOB!")

Who is this "us" you keep talking about? Would that be tax paying property
owners in Las Vegas?

To paraphrase a great AVLV antagonist of yours: "Clark County assessor's

That is correct. I do not pay property taxes on any home here in Las Vegas.
I had a small office at the commercial property in Henderson for a while,
but I now have everything in the third former bedroom here at the house. But
that does not mean I do not pay taxes. My rent (albeit very low) pays my
'owners' property taxes.

We pay property (and other taxes) on the commercial property. Just because
you cannot find it doesn't mean it does not exist. I have written
excessively on ways to reduce debt and be fiscally prudent. Too bad you
never pay attention.

Instead , like Sickpuppet and Sockpuppet, you also continue to be obsessed
about my life and what I do, Cyberhog. You are the coward of cowards. Why
is that?

Unlike you, I continue to be a very successful businessman and have recently
reunited with my former partner in Atlanta to work with him on a record
label. Imagine that? Me working in the music business! More
interestingly, it will be with Hip Hop and Christian/Gospel.

I am just full of surprises!

Meanwhile, our financial advisers suggest to us that the overall market will
regain 250 to 300 points by May 2009. Are we crazy? Who knows? You play
Sporgy and we will play NYSE (and others).

My prediction that oil would not go under $3 was wrong. Aw geez, I am so
sorry....

But then again I thought the Cubbies would beat my own Dodgers...

Can't win em all, can you?

You still remain an asshole, Hog. The only thing stupider than a compulsive
gambler is one who still thinks he is going to win that final bet. Enjoy

Mikey,
You never paid any property taxes in Las Vegas on any property. Ever.
You lied about owning a house. You don't own any property, commercial or
residential. And you never have.
You are not a successful businessman. You own no business.
Your predictions are as full of shit as you are.
In closing, CyberHoG is coming to Vegas to party with his friends, some
