When I used control-F to search for "torchwood.110.r21" in
alt.binaries.multimedia, what Agent 4.2/32.1118 found was something
that looked like a follow up to this message:

"#A.B.MM@EFNet REQ 25088 - Star.Trek.Voyager.S05E22.DVDRip - 24/39
stvs5ep22.r10 (01/40)"

When I hit R to copy the Subject header, it had this subject:

"Re: #Alt.Binaries.Multimedia on EFNet Presents: 27611 -
Torchwood.S01E10.720p.HDTV.x264-GOTHiC - [330/442] -
"gothic-x264-torchwood.110.r21" - yEnc (001/201)"

Is my database for this newsgroup corrupted? What is the best
procedure for fixing a corrupted database?

What is your problem? You did a Ctrl-f, which looks only at author and
subject, and found a message with a subject that contains what you were
looking for.

No, your database is probably not corrupt. This misthreading is most likely
the result of the threading hash collision bug. To save space and time,
Agent doesn't save the actual contents of References header from the
overview but calculates a 32 bit hash and uses that for threading.
Unfortunately 32 bits is too small so different Message-ID's will produce
the same hash. This causes Agent to treat the messages as the same for
threading, causing the misthreading. The more messages in a group, the more
likely this will happen. This bug has always existed in Agent. Hopefully
forte will eventually fix it. The work around is to sort by subject or use
global search to locate all the parts of the posting.

My problem is that on the message list display, the message was
displayed like this:

#A.B.MM@EFNet REQ 25088 - Star.Trek.Voyager.S05E22.DVDRip...
da...@staaf.nl (Daap Staaf)

(I left out the status and length columns. I also left out the
dates and the end of the long subject line. I included the message
above the one found so that you could see why I thought the message
was a reply.)

The message Agent found is the second line above which had an author
and a date only.

The subject containing "torchwood.110.r21" was NOT visible on the
message list display. The message looked to me like a reply to the
Star.Trek.Voyager message and NOT a Torchwood message at all. What
does it look like to you?

I am terribly cruel to my cat. I give him so little canned food
that he has to eat some dry just to survive. I won't let him
get on the table and eat off my plate. I sometimes refuse to
open a window he wants to smell out just because it's too cold/hot.
