hi folks - I've just started using Agent 6 having used a much older
version for a little while now.

Could anyone tell me where or how the DAT & IDX files are saved or
located (in version 6).

Sorry if this is a daft / popular question, but have only just
discovered this group having tried the www & failed.

Many thanks.

On any folder go to Folder | Properties | Name and Scheme

Down at the bottom is the full path to the .dat & .idx files.

Which version? There's a good chance you can save the old database.

I think you're looking for this:

hi - thanks for the tips. I'm running version 6.00 with Windows XP.

Previously the space hungry DAT & IDX? files where located in a DATA
folder in Agent (under Program Files)

I have backed-up when I installed the new version, however, I would
like to know where these are so I can DELETE them when necessary, as I
use a few binary groups like teevee which leave a massive index file
(or used to!)

Many thanks again

A. The *backup* copies of your DAT and IDX files?

The "backup" option in the installer does not back
up your DAT and IDX files.

B. The *working* copies of your DAT and IDX files?

Your Agent 6.0 DAT and IDX files could be in one of several
locations, as described in the Agent 6 help file at
Help >> Index >> Data Folder (or Data Directory) >> How Agent Determines the Data Folder

Nick Spalding's reply will tell you exactly where your
own DAT and IDX files are. Just follow the steps.
s|b's reply will tell you the default location for new
installs of Agent 6.0 (or of any Agent 4.2 and later).
Just read the FAQ entry.

In Agent 6.0 (or in any Agent 3.0 or later), deleting the
DAT and IDX files may unsubscribe you from the group.

To reduce the size of the files without unsubscribing, first delete
all of the messages in the group, and then compact databases.

My suggestion is to make a new folder called AGENT-DAT on another drive and tell AGENT
via the shortcut to "open in "?drive/my documents/agent-DAT"

Note that I also suggest that you move the whole my documents folder to another drive
just in case the OS falls over and you have to reinstall it and you will lose
everything.

Is there any way of recovering the messages if the DAT file is backed
up BUT the IDX file has become corrupted/deleted by an antivirus
program

Is it possible to rebuild the index in version 4

(A) IDX corrupted

If the IDX file has become corrupted (but not deleted)

Use the menu command "File >> Repair Selected Folders"
(which is available in Agent 3.3 and later).

(B) IDX deleted

Create an empty (zero-size) IDX file whose name
matches the DAT file, then use '(A)' above.

You might need to follow these steps
1. Start Agent and verify that the group/folder is in the
All Folders list.
2. Try 'repair selected folders'.
3. If that doesn't work, then -- with Agent still running --
3.1 Make sure the group/folder is not selected in Agent
3.2 Replace the DAT file in Agent's database with a
copy from your backup (because Agent might have
cleaned out the DAT file when it started.)
3.3 Replace the IDX file in Agent's database with a
copy from your backup (if it exists) or a zero-size
file (if it does not).
3.4 Now -- with Agent still running -- select the folder
again and run 'repair selected folders'.

> Is it possible to rebuild the index in version 4
> Regards Andy T

When Agent retrieves headers, some of the header fields
are stored in the DAT file, and other header fields are
stored in the IDX file and not in the DAT file.

If the body has not been downloaded, it is not possible
to recover all of the header fields from the DAT file alone.
Lines -- may be set to 100
Date -- may be set to the current date and time

For this reason, it is not totally correct to call the IDX file an index.
