You need to do two things

1. Enable POP in your Gmail settings
2. Configure Agent correctly

To enable POP in your Gmail settings

1.1 Log on to the Gmail web interface
1.2 Click the gear icon at the top right.
1.3 In the drop-down menu, select "Settings"
1.4 Click the tab 'Forwarding and POP/IMAP'
1.5 In setting #1, select one of the options
* Enable POP for all mail
* Enable POP for mail that arrives from now on
1.6 Take a note of setting #2, "When messages are accessed with POP".
1.7 Click 'Save Changes'

To configure Agent's POP (inbound mail) settings correctly

Unless you need to download mail more than a month old, I suggest
that you use Gmail's "recent mode".

2.1 Go to "Tools >> Servers and Accounts >> Inbound Email Accounts >> (*select Gmail*)

2.2 To use "recent mode", make sure Agent's settings look like this:

Host Name: pop.gmail.com
The server requires a secure connection (SSL): YES (CHECKED)
Login method: Simple username and password

Username: recent:user...@gmail.com
Replace 'user...@gmail.com' with your gmail address.
Put the letters 'recent:' in front of your gmail address

Password: [***enter your gmail password***]

Leave messages on server: YES (CHECKED)

Advanced settings:
Port: 995 (995 should be the default, when you selected "The server requires a secure connection (SSL)".)

Gmail behaves somewhat differently to a normal POP mail server.

If you use Gmail's "recent" mode, then you can download mail onto more
than one device/computer - but you will need to download mail within
one month of when the mail arrives.

If you do not use Gmail's "recent" mode, then you can only download main
onto one device/computer - but you will be able to download mail that
arrived more than a month ago.

2.2b To NOT use "recent mode", make sure Agent's settings look like this:

Host Name: pop.gmail.com
The server requires a secure connection (SSL): YES (CHECKED)
Login method: Simple username and password

Username: user...@gmail.com
Replace 'user...@gmail.com' with your gmail address.

Password: [***enter your gmail password***]

Leave messages on server: NO (UNCHECKED)

Advanced settings:
Port: 995 (995 should be the default, when you selected "The server requires a secure connection (SSL)".)

Gmail behaves somewhat differently to a normal POP mail server.

Agent's setting "Leave messages on server" should be set to YES
when using "recent mode" and to NO when not using "recent" mode.

Agent's setting "Leave messages on server" does not affect whether
the message is kept on Gmail's server. Your settings in Gmail
are what affects whether an email is kept after Agent downloads it.

1.1 Log on to the Gmail web interface
1.2 Click the gear icon at the top right.
1.3 In the drop-down menu, select "Settings"
1.4 Click the tab 'Forwarding and POP/IMAP'
1.6 Look at setting #2, "When messages are accessed with POP".
You may want to adjust this Gmail setting.

To configure Agent's SMTP (outbound mail) settings correctly

Note: If you send an email through Gmail's SMTP server, Gmail will
normally change the 'From:' address in the email to your Gmail address.

3.1 Go to "Tools >> Servers and Accounts >> Outbound Email Servers >> (*select Gmail*)

3.2 Make sure Agent's settings look like this:

Host Name: smtp.gmail.com
Connection: Connect securely on standard mail submission port
Login method: Username and password

Username: user...@gmail.com
Replace 'user...@gmail.com' with your gmail address.

Password: [***enter your gmail password***]

Advanced settings:
Port: 587 (587 should be the default, when you selected "Connect securely on standard mail submission port".)

1. "recent" mode applies only to POP. Not to IMAP.

Even without "recent" mode, you can still read on multiple
IMAP devices and one POP device.

2. "recent" mode is set separately in each POP mail client.
It is not a setting on the Gmail server.

As for whether "recent" mode is on in your POP mail client,
see this Gmail help page:
https://support.google.com/mail/answer/47948
and check how your POP mail client's server settings are set.

The key is whether or not you have "recent:" before your
username in your POP mail client's server settings.

The settings include everything shown in this image:

If you use it, "recent:" would go at the start of the username (not the hostname).
