All,

A week or so ago Agent was shut down abnormally.

Since then - when I 'Get New Headers in Selected Groups' - Agent starts to download all
headers, not just the new ones - based on the large number of headers identified in the
Retrieving new headers message.

Am running agent 1.93 - not the latest, however has been working fine for a long time.

I changed the Ranges.dat to Ranges.old and the Ranges.bak to Ranges.dat - made no
difference.

Please advise what must be done to get the number of headers last downloaded recognized as
being present so I can get the new headers only - not all that are available and that are
already downloaded.

Thanks.

Doug

You can do "Online -> Catch Up..." which will fix the problem but will only
download new headers from when you do it.

You can do "Online -> Sample Headers..." after the Catch Up to get the last
week's headers but you will have to sample be number and guess the number.
If you guess too big it won't hurt but will take more time. If you sample
by days, Agent 1.93 will download all the headers. Agent 6 can sample by
days without downloading all the headers.

You're welcome.

Use Online | Sample Headers from Selected Groups.

Use the first, by count, option with a reasonable guess at the number of
headers you are currently missing rather than the by days one which in
your old version does a Get All then filters the results.

Carroll,

Thank You for the guidance.

Will do as you suggest - however was wondering if there is a way to restore / edit a
control file i.e., the .ini file, to restore the configuration to the way it was before
whatever went wrong occurred?

Have also noticed when Getting New Headers in selected Groups that some messages are
flagged Get Marked Message Bodies, when I did not do so - any idea why that would occur.

Again - Thank you for the advice.

Downloading all headers in these groups with a slow connection is a real pain.

Regards,

Doug

You can try exporting a newsrc file, editing it, and then importing it.
That might or might not fix it. Ranges.dat is the native Agent file that
has the ranges of retrieved messages. The newsrc file comes from it.
Ranges.dat is not easily human readable. The newsrc file is a text file
that you can read and edit.

This is normally done by filters. Look at your filters to see if you can
spot one causing the marks. When you had an abnormal shutdown filters.dat
and filters.idx may have been corrupted. If you don't mind losing all your
Usenet filters, you can delete them.

Carroll,

Thanks again.

Sure enough - excepting the few groups where I have retried all headers, the newsrc file
shows no message numbers in the other groups, when clearly these groups have many
messages.

Is there a way to find out what the number of the last message in each of my groups
actually is, whether read or unread,?

That way I can edit the newsrc file to reflect what I have, import it and be back in
business - so to speak.

Have checked the Agent Help file and cannot find anything on how to determine the actual
number of messages in a group - other than the newsrc file which is incorrect.

Thanks again!

Doug

(Realize whatever went wrong might not have been on your end,
something might have changed on the server to cause this...)

Cindy,

Not sure if you saw my initial post - the problem started after Agent was abnormally shut
down.

The errorlog file contains the following entry: Unable to write database file C:\Program
Files\Agent\DATA\RANGES.DAT (Permission denied)

Do not recall the specifics - however something was not proceed correctly with another
operation, and Agent was terminated.

Thanks for your comment.

Doug

That error would mean that either the write to disk hit an error (hard
disk bad block, or some other less serious error) or the RANGES.DAT
was locked by another process - which would almost certainly be your
antivirus software.

Since you've done the only possible fix, restoring RANGES.BAK, and it
didn't work, you're basically screwed unless you have another recent
backup of RANGES.DAT (or BAK) somewhere.

If you don't, you're stuck with either catching up groups, sampling
headers by days since the problem started, or just getting all their
headers again. (In 1.93, sampling by days does download all headers
but discards the ones older than the limit. In 5/6, it just gets the
recent ones so is much quicker).

You can check your disk for errors using any number of tools - but
tick the "scan for bad sectors" option. Or "chkdsk /r c:" at a command
prompt.

Cheers - Jaimie

Thanks Jaimie.

I was hoping there was a way around this without having to get all headers all over again
or catching up groups and sampling headers by days.

I will certainly start the 'Export newsrc file on exit' feature from now on.

Thanks again!

Doug

Select the last message in a group using an appropriate view and sort.
Press H for show headers. The Xref header normally contains the article
number. If the article is crossposted it will have a number for each group.

your best bet would be to spend 30 bucks and get agent 6. it is the bees knees.
if you can't afford it download the demo and then get the serial number by
asking someone here . if that doesn't work. get it here:
