I would like to have access to a site that lets me browse
UseNet newsgroups exclusively. For instance google
groups offers the possibility to navigate usenet sites
but I am not interested in those google groups that
are not part of usenet, I want usenet only.
Anyone know where I may navigate across usenet
groups without having to wade through google groups
which are not part of NNTP UseNet?
Thanks,
John Goche
You posted your message using an internet connection whose IP number is
registered to "Telewest", which is now part of "Virgin Media"; they have
their own NNTP server, which you can use with a 'newsreader' program.
This looks like a reasonable place to start
<http://help2.virginmedia.com/help/getContent.jspx?page=help_newsgroups>.
Newcomers to newsgroups should start here
<http://computer.howstuffworks.com/newsgroup.htm>
and here
<http://www.anta.net/misc/nnq/>, the Official Home Page of the
newsgroup called news.newusers.questions.
See also the newsgroups alt.free.newsservers,
alt.usenet.news-server-comparison, and news.software.readers, for
discussions about the services and software available.

No, you are missing his point- that Google has effectively destroyed
the DejaNews archive which allowed quick & easy searches within NNTP/
Usenet for the latest messages anywhere in the 100 thousand+ Usenet
newsgroups. Since Google bought DejaNews Archive they have
progressively marginalized Usenet such that the name Usenet no longer
appears in the Google heirarchy among Maps, Earth, Finance, etc, etc.
'NEWS' now means: daily headlines. Choosing 'advanced search' no
longer lets you specify Usenet but comes up with 'search web pages'
with no option to change that to 'usenet groups'. Moreover Google has
bastardized the term 'groups' to now exclusively (it seems) mean
Google's GROUPS which reside somewhere in Google but are not part of
the NNTP protocol/realm. These bogus groups are sorted by name &
category but are filled with porn postings & utter nonsense.
So Google has reneged on its promise to maintain the DejaNews archive-
maybe the agreement had a specific duration, who knows. All I know is
that as of today I could not dig my way to a Usenet advanced search
for recent postings on a general subject. The way DejaNews would
routinely allow searches, often revealing valuable discussions in
unexpected newsgroups. By forcing you to choose the single ng to be
searched we are missing the ability to cast a wide net.
The OP says 'browse' but I believe he wants to 'search' all of UseNet
for current/recent msgs on a particular subject- as DejaNews allowed
us to do. There was no other way to do this easily. Looking down a
list of groups in a server is pointless unless you know where the
postings are located.
Using an NZB search, which Whiskers does not mention, may indeed be an
effective search tool. but it is limited to binary offerings only.
So Whiskers, how do we search Usenet for current postings by topic??

I agree that Google have wrecked what was once a very useful research
tool; <http://groups.google.com/advanced_search?q=&> can still be used,
but it's far less effective than it used to be - and does suffer from not
allowing non-usenet "Google Groups" to be excluded.
Good usenet clients do allow the user to search posts in the current
'spool' by subject or by author, but usually only one group at a time, so
it's not as easy as the original DejaNews search - and doesn't include
articles 'purged' from the news-server in use, of course.
I wouldn't miss Google Groups much at all if they were excluded from
usenet altogether - my usenet client can do that easily, as can many
others; some news-servers do it to. But that doesn't answer your 'how to
search' question.
