I watched my first Mexican movie all the way through with no subtitles,

"El Solitario Indomable"

and they kept saying "Oyale"

what is this? Does it mean, "Listen here..." ?

Thanks.

If we knew what we were doing it would not be called research, would it?

If my memory serves me well, I seem to have heard the same 'Oyale' in the
early Mexican films with 'Cantiflas' or 'Pedro Infante', later in Venezuela
and Colombia I would hear 'Oye' or 'Oiga' which seemed to be used to
attract someones attention... given the context in which they were used I
understood it to be just this, ie; attract someones attention or make an
attempt to dominate a discussion...
Hope this is helpful

Not much to do with your question, but I think it would help me in
studying Spanish to have a movie in Spanish with _Spanish_ subtitles.
Anyone ever hear of such a thing?

That would be closed captioning, wouldn't it?

I guess it would! I've heard of that on T.V., but not on video. Do they have
it on video? If it exists, I'd have to buy a new tv to see it, but it would be
worth it. Video stores here in Missouri only seem to have Spanish language
with English subtitles, but maybe video stores in Mexico would have what I
want. I would like to use them as an intermediate step in learning to hear
Spanish, which seems much more difficult to me than understanding written
Spanish.

"oyale" no tiene significado en español. Lo más parecido es "oigale".
