A recent episode of Northern Exposure prompted a big discussion on the
quote "the wonder is not how well the bear dances, but that he dances
at all." Well, after I mentioned this to my mother, she insists that
the original quote is by Samuel Johnson and goes something like
"A woman giving a public speech is like a dancing dog. The wonder is
not that she does it well, but that she does it at all." Can anyone
confirm or deny this and perhaps give an actual reference to either
of these quotes?
I have cross-posted this to several newsgroups, so be careful with the
follow ups.
