Can anybody suggest a spelling mnemonic for "bureau". I have to look
it up every time I use it, which will get embarrassing soon as I start
working for the local CAB next decade. For some reason I keep trying
to spell it beau....

I use a letter-true pronunciation in my mind to remember the
spelling: "bu-re-a-u".

Keep spelling it "beau" but add "your" [ chatroom abbreviated as "ur"]
after the first letter. So it's like "your (ur) beau"

You are far from being alone. It's one of the words I regularly have
to look up if I haven't used it for a while. A mnemonic is no use to
me; I'd quickly forget it.

The neighborhood in Calgary?

*clicks on geo coordinates in Wikipedia article*
Wait, that's not where Eau Claire is.
*click, click*
Huh? The coordinates in the body are correct, the ones in the
infobox are wrong.

There you go, all fixed now.

You need something to help you remember the mnemonic, then.

Take "bureal" and change the l to a u.

Too hard to remember. I'd be more likely to change the e to an i.

You're exaggerating.

Another suggestion:
Take the "bureav" and change the "v" to a "u" according to one of our
Latin pronounciation threads.

Exaggerating what? That his suggestion is REALLY, REALLY, REALLY
*STUPID* or that Busybody Bertel is a fuckin' asshole?

I thought I could top that, but apparently you think I
misoverestimated (remember w?) my capacities.

Picky, picky!

To be thorougly accurate, it should be "bvreav".

No need for mnemonics. Amplifying Hansen, I'd say just follow history.
People retreated behind a curtain-like piece of burlap to do desk
work, a burel, diminutive of bure/burlap, then comes the sound change
with darkening of the -el, followed by sound change yet again to long
o. Meanwhile it had become the name of the room and the desk. Then the
Angliche, as is their wont, changed the nature of the thing by making
a chest of drawers out of a desk. Complicated? Maybe, but you get more
for the same price.

Robin Bignall a écrit :

you could try : give the "bure au moine". (give the robe to the monk).

You could also think of the original pronounciation of "eau" (water)
in French : ee a u. (triphtong).
