A "Jakes" is a toilet. "Batboard" must be board and batten siding
indicating a roughly made outhouse. A broad-brimmed hat could be
pinned to keep it up and out of the man's vision.

I think the hat would be pinned to itself.

This hat has the brim turned up at the front. A hat with a broader and
more flexible brim would need the brim to be attached, pinned, to the
crown of the hat:

There is a particular style of hat, a "cavalier hat", where the brim at
the side is turned up and pinned to the crown:
