"A California man who threatened to bomb and shoot people at
Merriam-Webster Inc. over the dictionary company’s inclusive language
around gender was sentenced to prison Thursday, prosecutors said."

Well, someone had to post this in aue.

M-W is HQed in Springfield, MA. Seems a long way for a Californian
to go bomb and shoot.

Was the person's complaint that M-W does not provide phonemic
transcriptions of the words? That subject seems to stir up some
people.

Since the purpose of a phonetic transcription is to provide the
pronunciation(s) used for the words, what good would a phonemic
transcription be?

M-W puts the pronunciations in backslashes, precisely to avoid
suggesting that the transcriptions are phonemic.

If your entry doesn't have a pronunciation, just look upward an entry
or two for the first word spelled the same way.

This of course refers to actual dictionaries, not to their condensations
on web sites.

Today is "Monday, Monday". Released in the same year as "Ruby Tuesday".

Both good at the time. Yes, I remember it well...

I found this afternoon an original "She Loves You" 45rpm single in a box
high on a shelf in a cupboard here.

You found this afternoon? Were you in search of lost time?

I like to set challenges - Latin has inflexions and a word order that
appeals to the author while the recipient has to decode the meaning, but
English cares more for word order and largely forgets inflexions.
Yesterday I found my 11-year-old grand-daughter learning Latin of her
own volition with Duolingo. I must support Latin!
