I've heard this dog referenced as, "when Hector was a pup."
Were they both named Hector? In which case I move we redirect this thread

I thought Hector *was* the pup, as in "I haven't seen you since Hector was a
pup." I've always assumed "pup" meant "child."

I don't know how relevant, but I have heard the phrase 'since Hector was
a pup' to mean a long time ago.
