Arnold Schwarzenegger seems always to have been with our
family, as the children grew up. I was surprised to watch an
(old) film with him reciting poetry today. One of my favourite
poets as well!

I would imagine his move into politics has left a lot of people
rather disillusioned :(

The poem he recites is this one:
"If you were a bird, and lived on high,
You'd lean on the wind when the wind came by..."

Spring Morning

Where am I going? I don't quite know.
Down to the stream where the king-cups grow -
Up on the hill where the pine-trees blow -
Anywhere, anywhere. I don't know.

Where am I going? The clouds sail by,
Little ones, baby ones, over the sky.
Where am I going? The shadows pass,
Little ones, baby ones, over the grass.

If you were a cloud, and sailed up there,
You'd sail on water as blue as air,
And you'd see me here in the fields and say:
"Doesn't the sky look green today?"

Where am I going? The high rooks call:
"It's awful fun to be born at all."
Where am I going? The ring-doves coo:
"We do have beautiful things to do."

If you were a bird, and lived on high,
You'd lean on the wind when the wind came by,
You'd say to the wind when it took you away:
"That's where I wanted to go today!"

Where am I going? I don't quite know.
What does it matter where people go?
Down to the wood where the blue-bells grow -
Anywhere, anywhere. I don't know.

A A Milne.

Well, he never got a part because he was a great actor. He had a great
bodybuilder's body, and he was good-humoured about the strong accent he
couldn't shed. I don't know why his move into politics should have
disillusioned anyone. He was ambitious and likeable, which is an
effective combination for a politician.

And it has been five years since he left politics. These days, we in
North America see him in very bad commercials for a video game. I'm not
sure what else he's doing with his time.

You're lucky. He's about to debut as the new host of *Celebrity Apprentice*.

NBC is kind to me -- they keep scheduling stuff like that, and *The Voice*, and
*Dateline*, in great two-hour chunks, sometimes several times a week, so there
are plenty of nights I don't have to worry about taping more than one program
while watching another.

Wikipedia authors disagree, but Schwartzenegger's career took
off when he starred in the "docudrama" Pumping Iron (1977), about
competitive posing (Mr. Universe etc.) because of AS's sense of
humour. The film has a completely unspoken coherent and amusing
subtext about AS's coaching a younger competitor in the same game
(Lou Ferrigno), while making sure AS always won.
