savior vs. saviour

I was just writing something and typed "Saviour" and when I hit Send spell
check flagged it and said "no, it should be Savior". I swear (to God)
growing up I was taught "Saviour" but this site (below) says in AmE "Savior"
is preferred... Now I'm confused. Did I actually grow up in the UK? I
could have sworn I grew up in Pennsylvania.

"In American English, savior is the preferred spelling of the noun referring
to (1) a person who rescues another from danger, or (2) Jesus. All other
main varieties of English use saviour.

That's the way I've seen it spelt in American publications.

I think that the (1) and (2) are a bit misleading, though. Jesus is sometimes
given the epithet "Saviour/Savior" because he is seen as an instance of (1).
