I heard it in a catchy song; I know that it is some sort of American slang
(holla) / phrase type of thing. But I must admit that I don't have the
faintest clue as to what it could possibly mean, sorry.

Would be very grateful if some kind soul could enlighten me.

You can try the Urban Dictionary
<http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=hollaback>, but there
doesn't seem to be a consensus except that someone named Gwen Stefani
popularized it. The cross-reference to "holla back" has several
definitions meaning "greet" or "get into contact with me" (holler,
especially in "Give me a holler").

Going on to just plain "holla", I see that it can mean hitting on (=
British "chatting up"?) a woman or girl, which corroborates the
explanation that a girl who "hollas back" is one who responds to such
overtures.

Joe? Why are you wasting your time trolling people about Tipper Gore
in AAVE (and possibly getting trolled back) when you could be helping?

Think of a car with boys driving past some girls. The boys shout out at
the thing "het babe" and the like,a hollaback girl yells back in a positive
fashion. A hollaback girl could be seen as a tramp or slut. Holla = holler.

Dontcha know what a Hollaback girl is? —— that's a girl who's got a hollow back. Doctors diagnose Hollabacks by knocking on them and getting a hollow back echo sound. It's very pronounced when Hollabacks try to sings, in fact, that's how Gwen Steffani was discovered, that's her story and I'm sticking to it.

I hate to rain on your very elaborate and spectacular parade but
surely if you've got a hollow back (as opposed to a hollow body)
there's nothing to knock on?
