Ok, Where I live in Canada (St. Johns Nfld) just this past summer a New
Tim Hortons Doughnuts opened up just down the street from me.
Coincidentally it just happened to be Right in Front of the local police
station...

Oooooh! A native! Just how is "Newfoundland" pronounced by the
natives? I was taught /'nuf @n l@nd/ (NOOF-un-lund) is correct;
this is the way MWCD10 gives it, but I seem to hear /nu 'faUnd
land/ (new found land) more often than not.

My real address doesn't include a Christian name.
Emailed copies of responses are very much appreciated.

NEVER pronounce it /nu 'faUnd land/! Your first pronounciation was right.

I've been spending the holidays watching TV ads with various actors saying
'Seasons greetings from the cast and crew of (fill in blank) to our
viewers in Newfoundland.', and on a bad evening, I think over half of them
mispronounce the name of the place. On a good one, it seems more like a
third.

Greetings!

>Does Tim Horton really do all the Socially Good Things that are
>claimed for him?

Well, seeing as how he's been dead since the 70s, any Social Good he's doing
must be as an angel.....

Timmy Ho's (the corporation) does run at least one camp for (I believe)
seriously ill children. I don't know the details.

>Mind you, doughnut-wise, I always enjoy stopping in when in Canada!

Yep, best donuts (or doughnuts) in the world, and Timmy's is about the best
of the best. I was amused to see them appearing in my hometown of Columbus,
OH last time I was home, but then Wendy's has either purchased them or the
rights to open shops in the States, and Wendy's is Columbus-based.

(By the way, for those of you who keep track of this kind of thing, the
whole idea of Stan Mikita Doughnuts as used in the movie _Wayne's World_ is
a play on the Tim Horton's concept.)

Cheers--
Susan
