Present wife implies there has been another (or will be another) not
just that she that she is currently his wife.

You might just be able to say it but not write it, as your tone
of voice should be able to convey what you mean.

It would be much better to say he was speaking to his
future wife.

...while his brother was phoning his absent wife?
