No, but it could've been.

The answer is:

"Because people catch it right off the bat".

I coined the riddle yesterday and I'm not sure it really
works for native speakers. (Any feedback is welcome.)

You need to clue "bat" somehow in the statement of the riddle

I was going to try "Because it makes people go down ill
fast".

I think many of us have forgotten the "bat" aspect of COVID.
"Right off the bat", is not an everyday phrase (for me). If it
meant anything it would be "directly" or "right from the
horse's mouth".

A Cockney joke innit.

That's what it means in American, too. Did it originate in
cricket or in baseball?

I did not get the Chiroptera reference until Madhu and you
explained it.

Peter T. Daniels explained on 9/21/2021 :
I thought the Pholidota were still a current suspect. Harvesting the
critters appears to be done with smoke, cudgels, and boiling alive.

All species count as endangered by both poaching and deforestation.

Or table-tennis. We don't have "paddles" we have bats. Or
"rounders" from which baseball originated.
