Does anyone know the origin of the word "gillflirted"? Not sure of the
spelling. I have heard it used in Mississippi and southeast Texas to
refer to something or someone that acts weird.

It's in the Thorndike Barnhart, only as:
gillflirt (jil flert) noun. Archaic, a giddy girl.

Maybe the OED?

As TB says, it's archaic. Nowadays, modern folks call her a "flibberty-gibbet".

Yes I do.
It means "not right" or messed up.

Let me explain. It's a nice way of saying Gill f*cked. When you hook a fish in its gills it's gonna die. There is no use in even throwing it back, it's gonna die. So either chop it up for bait or throw it in the bucket cause he's "gillfucked".

Now we can't use that kind of language around women, kids or in public so we say gillflirted or gilflirted it is also spelled sometimes.

Hope that helps. Yes, it IS a south east Texas thing...

In case anyone was wondering, the original question for this one was
posted by an Angela Greig in 1999 and read:

The subject line of the original is the same as for Raug's response,
which of course should have had a "Re:" added.
