Ten Things You Didn't Know Were Racist

By John Leo
National Review Online

1. "Baa, Baa Black Sheep" is racist. The nursery rhyme,
which dates back to the Middle Ages, is under attack.
Some schools and family centers in Scotland, England, and
Australia have eliminated the word "black" as racist, and
now refer to "rainbow sheep," "happy sheep," or "green
sheep," . . .

2. M.A.s may be racist, postmasters too. Stephen Davis,
master of Pierson College at Yale, says the word "master"
in his title is severely upsetting some students and
driving them off campus. . . .

LBGT sheep? Now THAT'S racist :-)

I was surprised by the reference to Australia, because I'd never heard
of such an attack. We have a lot of white sheep and a few black sheep,
and the general belief is that they're all of the same race. We don't
have any green or rainbow sheep. It's a little difficult to tell whether
a sheep is happy.

Anyway, a bit of googling found me an article that refers to a
kindergarten in Victoria. One of the people offended by the teachers'
action (which also included an opinion that it was sexist to refer to
the little boy down the lane) came up with a new version:

Blah blah, that sheep
Are you having a good day?
I sure hope so
Because I wouldn’t want to offend you
In any way.

Google also pointed me to an article mentioning a school in North
Queensland, but most of the article was about Britain. It did, however,
include this:

"In other examples, the principal of a school in NSW last year adapted
the lyrics from Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gum Tree so children would
say how happy, rather than gay, his life must be."

It's a good thing we don't have any songs about white swans, which form
a minority group in this country.

Well, when you're standing right behind it you can't see if it has a
smile on its face...

Mary had a little lamb
Its fleece was black as soot
and everywhere that Mary went
its sooty foot it put.

In any case such practices denegrate the poor sheep
themselves ... encouraging speciesism and a serious
loss of self-esteem, especially amongst sheep with
black wool ! We might even derive that prejudicial
attitudes against black sheep could easily spill across
species boundaries and become prejudice against
'black' PEOPLE !

Good. They sound like exactly the sort of "students" who shouldn't
be there anyway.
