I've had a shell account with them for several years now. They've
already done right by me. And, while it isn't 100% free, it is close
enough: $1 gets you verified, and $36 gets you a lifetime account. I
have had my lifetime account now for... six years, I think.

Did you run telnet yourself? What did telnet return? Simply saying
that you could not connect does not tell me what you tried, nor give me
any indication as to why you might not have connected.
The service is up:
mbt@sage:~$ telnet freeshell.org
Trying 192.94.73.30...

Dear Mike,
I used a telnet program to get to that website, seemed like it was taken
off, just had no responses back.
The website told me to use a telnet program to login as "newuser" in order
to create a free account.
Thanks
Jack
You cannot telnet to a web site.
Under either Windows or a GNU/Linux system (or any other Unix-like or
UNIX system), you can simply open a command prompt or terminal window
and type the following command:
telnet freeshell.org
You will be greeted with something resembling the following:
Trying 192.94.73.30...
Connected to freeshell.org.
Escape character is '^]'.
sdf.lonestar.org (ttyq4)
if new, login 'new' ..
login:
Follow the direction to login with the 'new' account, and you will see
something like this:
Last login: Tue Sep 25 07:33:26 2007 from
user-0ccsu5a.cable.mindspring.com on ttyr2
You will now be connected to NEWUSER mkacct server.
Please login as 'new' when prompted.
[RETURN] - THIS MAY TAKE A MOMENT ...
From there, follow the on-screen directions to sign up with a new account.
I've just connected and come this far in the process. Since I have an
account already, there's no need for me to go any further.
