I just got a brand new compurter. I formated the drive to get rid of windows
so that I could install FreeBSD.

I'm new to all this stuff, i've been using slack for about a month -read
that BSD blows Linux off the water but I can't get BSD to start.

I start up and BSD says CANOT CONNECT TO X SERVER. What does that mean? I
try; startX and kstart......No Luck.

Could someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks.......

The GUI hasn't been configured for your video card and monitor. I
haven't installed BSD, maybe someone in a BSD newsgroup can help.

FREEBSD does EXACTLY what you tell it to do. During your first
installation you really need to pay attention to what is going on. It
is EXTREMELY EASY to not install packages needed for x11. UNIX doesn't
care.. it will run like a champion without GUI. Take this oportunity to
learn your way around the OS in the CLI. As your primary computer
though you may get frustrated. Set up a nice melow version of LINUX
(Debian, REDHAT, MANDRAKE, etc etc etc) and set up freeBSD on a
secondary computer. Network them, SSH into the BSD box and commence to
learning it. As for getting this one running.... as a user new to the
BSD world.. re install.. pay close attention to what you are putting on
it and what you are excluding. The standard FreeBSD install does NOT
install GUI.

FreeBSD is very well documented and you sound like your smart enough to RTFM! Thats the only way to
really learn it and the handbook will tell you how to do everything you want to do. Just look for
the section on installing and configuring an X server. Then you will need a window manager or
desktop environment. Good luck.
