Lutter misses weight, plans to win against Silva, even though just a
pound and a half keeps the fight from being a title fight.

Despite two tries at the scale, TUF 4 winner Travis Lutter will not be
challenging for Anderson Silva's UFC Middleweight Championship
Saturday night after coming in at a final weight of 186.5 pounds, a
pound and a half over the 185-pound middleweight limit. Lutter's first
attempt at making weight was 187 pounds, and after two hours he was
only able to lose a half-pound. Tomorrow's UFC 67: All or Nothing main
event will now be a three round non-title match, with Lutter being
fined 10% of his purse by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (5%
going to Silva, 5% to the NSAC).

So, did they lower the price of the PPV?

Actually it was the best fight of the night.

Yes he did way better than I thought he would....if he was focused and
in shape he could've had a good run at it.

I thought elbows to the top of the head were illegal now?

I think you could tell that all three of the commentry team thought they
were somewhat illegal too...

and best fight of the night?? c'mon... the first and second last fights were
the best, they always are. Tital fights (or in this case non-tital) are a
letdown 90 percent of the time. Sure I enjoyed the lutter fight but I
wouldn't say it was 'best fight of the night'...

You could see the ref changing position to check the angle of the elbows,
as Randy explained verticle elbows to the top of the head are illegal but
Silva's were arced and paralelle to the mat so they are fine. He was
hitting across the top of the head not down and directly onto the head. Joe
didn't seem to understand why either method was illegal or not but Randy, a
veteran and a coach, seemed to have the real explanation to why Silva's were
allowed - I guess a fighter would know the difference.

OK, thanks. I was in a sports bar and couldn't hear the commentary. I
don't understand why either method is illegal either.

Royce Gracie loved to use them when he had his opponent wrapped up.

The issue is that a downward strike with the point of the elbow can
cause the skull to crack and/or severe internal brain damage if it
strikes the crown of the head. A left-to-right strike is much more
awkward, and is more likely to cut than cause any serious internal
damage.

It's similar to the stomp vs kick issue. Stomps project their force
inward, they're designed to bypass the body's natural protection,
rupture organs. Normal kicks release the force in the flesh and bone,
distributed evenly.
