King of the Cage 9 Notes
June 23, 2001
Tim Catalfo looked unstoppable as he tapped out Dave Beneteau
in 25 seconds. Beneteau shot in on Catalfo to start the fight,
Catalfo stuffs his shoot and rains several unanswered right
hands on Beneteau's head. Beneteau starts to getup and Catalfo
sinks the guillotine choke. Great fight for the 42 year old Catalfo.
After he released the choke, Catalfo stands up, points to Don Frye
who was in Beneteau's corner, and yells "F--- You!" Frye jumps in
the ring to go after Catalfo, and it took a ringful of people to
hold him back. Don Frye told us later that he now wants to fight
Catalfo in the next King of the Cage.
A lot of people seem to hate Don Frye. I remember the first few
tourneys Frye fought in, he was a really humble guy who seemed like someone you
could promote the sport around. But during the tournament where Coleman
pounded his ass in the finals, he seemed to turn into a prick. Tank Abbott
accurately pointed this out during his commentary that night as well. At any
rate, Frye seems to have turned into one of the more hated fighters these days.
Instead of fighting Catalfo, it would be interesting to see Fyre fight
Catalfo's student, Bill Goldberg.
I think it would interesting to see Frye fight anyone in his weightclass.
How many years has it been since he really fought? Of course, Frye was top
notch in his day, so I would have to say Frye by flying elbow or clotheline.

Bob
Logically, he would have to go through Harold Howard first.

I knew that Tim Catalfo was the real deal, but I'm suprised that
he beat Dave Beneteau that quickly, because Beneteau is actually a
decent fighter (plus, he spent some time training with Don Frye for
this fight). Catalfo is a badass, and the dude's something like 45 or
46 years old, maybe older! It's too bad that Catalfo isn't 10-20 years
younger, because if he was he'd be one of the top fighters in the
sport, maybe the top. Does anybody know what happened to Catalfo's
Obake Fight School? At one time Mark Coleman, Kevin Randleman, and
some other Hammer House guys were trained there, as well as Bill
Goldberg (man, I'd still like to see that guy fight in a legit shoot
with Catalfo in his corner), and Obake was considered to be one of the
best places to train in MMA in the country, then all of a sudden
Catalfo & Obake disappeared from the radar screen. Catalfo's sudden
emergence in this recent King of the Cage show is the first that I've
heard about him in a while. I was wondering what happened to this
guy....
Frye needs to take a couple lower tier fighters to warm up first.
Personally, I think Coleman and Couture would give a serious beatdown.

Bob
Agreed my good man, although I think he should look at any type BUT a
major wrestling monster. Love to see how he'd do against guys like Iha,
Braga, etc.
Peet
Iha's only about 170 lbs., isn't he? What weight did Braga fight at and
where has he been?

Bob
Frye may have been able to make the under 200 class when he was fighting (I
say this *knowing* that he didn't, but because he fought under 210), but he
looks to be closer to 240 than 200 now.

A vs B vs C theory exists but Catalfo spanking Cacareco is worthy of
consideration. Cacareco holds wins over Bob Schreiber, Shannon Ritch, Moti
Horenstein and Heath Herring.
I don't remember them fighting but I do remember an interview with Joe Pardo
who said Catalfo was the strongest guy he'd ever rolled with and was
absolutely shocked to hear that Catalfo hadn't won a tournament that he had
entered. (the interviewer explained that Tim had been eye gouged and
couldn't continue) But I remember Pardo being *very* surprised at the
thought of Catalfo losing to anyone.

Frye is scheduled to wrestle Kazuyuki Fujita in the main event of
New Japan Pro Wrestling's big Sapporo Dome (I think that's the right
arena) show in July (the 20th I believe), so maybe his contract expires
sometime after June 30th, either that, or he's singed some type of
extension deal.

He'd crush them because he outweighs them by more than 50 pounds. I think Frye
would get beatdown by Rizzo, Couture, Coleman, Igor, and any other top 10
heavyweight.
I might even take Big Daddy Goodridge in a rematch.
Didn't he get badly eyegouged in a fight in Brazil a few years back?
I already knew about Catalfo beating Carareco in an IVC event in
Brazil a few years ago, in fact, I've got it on tape. I also know
that Catalfo has won some underground fights in Atlanta.
From what I know about Catalfo, he was doing MMA before it was the
"cool" thing to do, back before the UFC ever came out. He was a
freestyle wrestler at one time (I think that he made the Olympic team)
and he also trained in several other styles from sambo to judo to TKD to
muay Thai to etc... I'm pretty sure that he's a chiropracter by trade
and has his own private practice.
Waddaya mean "he"? I was talking about Sonia.
Peter
Who said I wanted it to be fair? I loved seeing Frye/Bitetti and would
enjoy something similar.
Seriously, Braga has fought Randleman and Severn if I'm not mistaken, so I
took him to be in the 200 range at least. Iha seems to be closer to
178-180 IMHO, but then again, I just like to see guys in the Gracie train
get clocked.
Pete
I have always maintained that chiropractors are among the most dangerous people
on earth. Look for good things from Catalfo.
