I found a painting of then
Lt. Colonel Lyon. I believe
he may be the first of my
family to move to the US.
I've a message in for the
curator who is on holiday
herself, to learn the
first name of this fine bloke.
Now your asking yourself:
But, Bob, your last name is "Lyons"
not "Lyon". What gives?
well, when my dad joined the US Navy
they spelled his name wrong and by the
time he got out he found it too expensive
to get all his documents changed, so
he left the "S" on the end of our surname.
Also, the National Portrait Gallery was
free admission - donations are accepted.

Cool. Family history can be interesting. Especially when you find
pictures in places you never thought possible.
A couple of years ago, my family was at Mystic Seaport in Connecticutt
and we found a picture of my grandfather hung in their sailors'
photograph gallery.
Rose
it's weird,
particularly
when you're
not going out
of your way to
find these things.
Your grandfather was hung, and they took a picture of it? That's kinda weird,
innit? (Unless someone is really well-hung, and it's worth taking photos to
prove it. Or maybe the sailors had all tied some really cool nautical knots
into the noose, and they wanted to show off their work.)

Egh! Who pays for THAT wedding?!?

if her grandfather was hung,
maybe that's why the sailors
like him so?
You're misunderstanding me on purpose!! :-)
No, he wasn't hung (as with a noose for a crime. The other you'd have
to ask my grandmother and she's also passed on. Although if you did
have the nerve to ask her, you'd probably get the response, "You and who
else wants to know?") A picture of him and his crewmates is now on
display at Mystic Seaport.
Better? :-))
Rose
(see my reply to Data for most of your answer here.)
As for the crew liking him, well, they liked him well enough until the
galley cook got sick. This was in the Philadephia harbor that this
happened.
It seemed the cook got sick (my grandfather had nothing to do with *his*
illness) after he had put the baking soda on the beans to let them soak
overnight. The captain asked my grandfather to take over. My
grandfather was no cook. Seems he didn't drain the beans and put fresh
water on them to cook them. He cooked them in the baking soda water.
The men all came down with the runs (turkey trots, etc. Whatever you
want to call it.) They decided to get even. My grandfather jumped ship
in Philadelphia to avoid them and that's how he came to America.
What can I say? He had to be original. :-)
Rose
hehehehe,
we were just teasing!
my dad was stationed at Philly;
that's how he originally met
& later married my mother.
?
You mean ... you were teasing? Huh.

It usually works best to do it in that order. Except for mail-order brides, of
course.

So ... you're grandfather was Joxer? (Insert comment about Joxer being "hung"
here.)
