HELP!!!
Rose
I use PopUp Killer from http://software.xfx.net/products/utilities.htm
It's worked pretty well for me, and certainly lives up to it's name.
As for keeping keeping stuff private I use and recommend McAfee's "Internet
Guard Dog". You can set it to warn you if particular info, such as Credit
card numbers e-mail addy, home addy and other personal stuff is about to be
sent over the internet, it pops up every time I send an e-mail using my
"home" e-mail but it's worth it for the peace of mind.
And if you buy the full Office suite you get the Virus checker, a personal
firewall etc.
Other alternatives might be Norton Utilities, but I haven't tried that one
so I don't really know how it compares. I can only recommend what I use on
my PC!
There are a few Personal Firewall programs out at the moment, so it's pretty
much a case of hunting around and finding the one that suits you best.
Hope this helps.

the pop-ups are getting worse, too; i've gotten 4 or more at a time. very
annoying. if people would simply never, ever, ever buy from these people, it
might stop them.
ha.
http://www.webwasher.com stops webbugs, pop-ups, pop-unders, filters adverts
from webpages themselves (put's a blank space there instead)... I use it
and swear by it. User friendly as well.
Not so user friendly but more versatile is Proxomitron (dunno what the
website is but google.com should know).

I didn't know about that one, Paul. Thanks for posting it.
I've tried POW, which, like Batman, kapows anything it doesn't like
that you've specified in advance. I guess they couldn't spell Xena's
ayayayayayaya :)
POW is not all that great because popup windows still appear for a very
short time, but it's really fulfilling to see them powed out of existence.
Knowadays, though, the Mozilla 0.9.9 web browser has checkboxes
to enable/disable all the annoying things Rose mentioned. It's worked
flawlessly for a month now on my Win box, and I'm once again in control
of my own computer. Still I emailed Yahoo and told them I'm not coming
back after emailing Google to thank them profusely.
All I had to do was uncheck "Allow websites to open unrequested
windows." That stops those javascript tricks.
Get the goods at http://www.mozilla.org/ because it's the opensource
replacement for Netscape Navigator.
I think Opera has the same capability, but I haven't tried it.

Matthew

Funny, I've never had any (visible) problems and I've been running it with
IE6 for at least two months now, I got it off a PC mag. Is there anywhere
where I could look up what the problems are?

Considering how many people complain about them it's a wonder that they get
enough buyers to make them worthwhile :(
you're using ie6, which most people are not (i think; isn't 5 the most common
version still?). maybe it's ok with webwasher. the author did not say the
problems were universal, anyway, just too common.
I've been using a little freeware program called Pop-Up Stopper (note the
slightly different name from the other utility discussed earlier in this
thread), and you can get it at http://www.panicware.com/
Works great in Windows 98, and I also use it on a Windows XP system - have had
no problems whatsoever. Says it works with Internet Explorer and Netscape,
although I only use it with IE.

Okay, I checked it out and downloaded it. But it doesn't like letting
me open up a link in another window. Guess I'll have to check with tech
support on that one.

I found my answer!!!

It amazes me that people do.
All the intrusive jerkoffs trying to sell their junk or get people to
their websites must be braindead: they piss people off the first time they
suck you to their site or fill your screen with their commercial crap, and
then do it over and over and over again, filling newsgroups and email
in-baskets over and over, and don't realise that they are driving away
people who just might possibly have responded positively to a more open and
honest form of advertising.
But if they had brains they'd be doing something other that trying to
sell junk over the Internet.
Hello there,
The Opera 6.01 Browser http://www.opera.com has "Quick Preferences"
(F12) that can be set to: 1) Accept pop-up windows
2) Refuse pop-up windows
3) Open pop-up windows in background
The Zone Alarm Pro 3.0.091 Firewall http://www.zonealarm.com has a
very effective Privacy Control and Banner Ad Blocker. It even blocks
the ads in the menu bar of the free version of Opera!
Using this combination works well for me. When I have to launch
IE 6 to view web pages that use non-standard Microsloth ;^) extensions,
I end up wishing it had the "Refuse pop-up windows" feature. The same
goes for Netscape 6.
I don't work for, or receive any consideration or compensation from
Opera or Zone Alarm. I recommend them because I like their products.
Hope This is Helpful,

My thoughts exactly. What pisses me off especially is the impudence of the
following sort of annotation:
"Note: This email was sent to you because this email address was entered in
on a website requesting to be a registered subscriber. The email address was
then verified and the agreement confirmed by someone responding from your
email address that required confirmation of registration. This is a double
opt-in list and can NOT in any way be construed as spam."
The heck don't tell _me_ what spam is and what not! It's unsolicited bulk
advertisement mail and that's exactly what is commonly called spam. You
can't define that away. I didn't enter my own email address in on your
fucking website and from my address, no confirmation at all was sent, after
all, *I*'ve gotta know that.
Moreover, some of these annotations refer to a spam paragraph which is only
a bill and not at all valid law. To Tartaros with those annoyers!

Of course.

Thanks for bringing it up. It seems that during this past week, the popup
windows have tripled and they are more than just a little invasive. In many
cases the images are active and moving all around the original screen,
obliterating the printed words for a few seconds. I had AdSubtract
installed for a while on my computer but I wasn't sure if that was just
going to mess up things even more. It did, however, seem to cut down on the
ads and then around a week ago, it seemed to be fighting a storm of ads that
even it, couldn't keep up with. What gives? Oh yeah.... that one for the
stupid spy camera has a life of its own as does the "Casino on Net".....
... Vi
Thanks Data..... I downloaded it yesterday and I haven't had a single pop-up
since(not yet anyway <g>) It's much better than AdSubtract.... again, "so
far"..... ;~)
..... Vi
oh, and the spyware game is about to get very interesting
