Hi

Trying to be positive amongst the apparent gloom.

What did you think was the best subtext moments of S5?

I'd say the ep 'Kindred Spirit' has to be the obvious choice here. I
liked Gabs waking up from snoozing and saying "Not tonight" and
blushing.

Demon Xena reaching out and stroking angel Gab's cheek, after she'd
knocked her out of the sky in 'Fallen Angel'.

Gab's dagger looks at Antony in 'Antony And Cleopatra'.

Gabs breaking out of her fishy trance by dreaming of Xena in 'Married
With Fishsticks'.

Xena telling Ares that Gabs was the father in 'Seeds Of Faith' and Ares
saying "I would have *paid* to see that."

Xena and Gabs singing to each other on the stage at the end of 'Lyre,
Lyre, Hearts On Fire'.

Ares burying the two of them together in 'Looking Death In The Eye'.

Xena telling Gabs she does see her in 'Succession' and Gabs getting all
choked.

I'm sure there are many more...

Regards

Yay! Finally something positive to think about. Okay I haven't seen much of
season five cause I live in the U.K. However my fave Gab Xena moment ever
would have to be...One Against An Army 'Even in death Gabrielle I will never
leave you' I thought that so so sweet. Also the 'I sleep next to Xena' quote
from Unforgiven. Oh and definatley the campfire scene in Callisto, that was
so good.

Thanks for including some of your faviorite subtext moments, Mark, and
coming up with a positive topic for this group.

I think the best subtext (and maintext) moments occured in the first
five episodes of the season, before things took such a major downturn
with "Purity". Without duplicating any of your fine examples, Mark,
here are some of my favorite subtext (and maintext) X/G relationship
moments of season five:

-Fallen Angel: This entire episode was really very much a powerful
maintext affirmation of Xena and Gab's love. Some standout *maintext*
moments: Demon Xena to Gab: "Our love is beyond Heaven and Hell,
beyond good and evil. It's an end in itself".

Gab (upon waking up alive again at the end with Xena): "We're going to
be together....forever".

Subtext moments from Fallen Angel: Gab waking up in Hell cuddled up to
Callisto. Before Gab opens her eyes and sees who she's snuggled up
against, she softy calls out "Xena..." as if she is simply used to
waking up in Xena's arms. At the end, Xena and Gab reach for each
other's hands upon waking up alive again, and the episode fades out
with Gabrielle leaning on Xena's bare shoulder.

Subtext and maintext in the next four eps:

-Chakram: Xena's line to herself after telling Joxer how to tell Gab
he loves her: "Or you could just kiss the girl". Gab's line to Xena
after Xena told her how she showed up just when she needed
her: "Timing is everything.......well....maybe not everything...."

-Succession: Mavican's line to Gab: "What's it like to be with Xena?"
Ares combining Xena and Gab into one body. Ares "isn't that sweet"
attitude towards Xena and Gab at the end. Xena playfully putting her
arm around Gab at the end, and running her hand along the length of
Gab's arm.

-Animal Attraction: Xena's line to herself when she realizes she's
going to have to tell Gab she's pregnent: "Gabrielle's gonna freak!"
Gabrielle's reactions to Xena's pregnency, which seemed to go through
surprise, hurt and jealousy, before she came around to acceptance at
the end.

-Then Bones, Them Bones: Gab to Xena (before journeying to the spirit
realm): "Don't let go of me!" Xena: "Never". Earlier in the
episode: Xena to Gab: "I've seen Alti rip the hearts out of people I
love. I'm not going to take that chance with you." Alti to
Gab: "Xena's little bitch!" Xena breathing her life force into Gab
through direct mouth to mouth contact, to bring her back to the spirit
world, then saying to Gab: "I got you now, I got you now", stroking
Gab's face and maintaining loving eye contact. When Xena comes back
from the spirit world, Gab holds Xena and they engage in long, loving
eye contact, with the following dialog: Xena: "Gabrielle".
Gab: "You did it". Xena: "We did it". Also Gab telling Xena at the
beginning of the ep how beautiful she looks pregnent.

After that, IMO, the show changed completely. A few brief subtext
moments from episodes after this point though:

-Little Problems: Xena and Gab's walk on the beach at the end, with
Xena playfully touching Gabrielle's neck. The look in Gab's eyes in
this ep where she's defending Xena's body, the look of a woman
defending her mate at all costs.

-Kindred Spirits: In a discussion about lovers with the other Amazons,
Gab says "I think what Xena's trying to say is that some *people* make
better lovers than others", at which point Xena and Gab give each other
very knowing looks. Later in the ep, one of the young Amazons refers
to Xena and Gab as having "Broken up".

-Looking Death in the Eye: Ares speach over Xena and Gab's ice coffins
at the end, where he acknoledges Xena and Gab's love and special bond.

Cute. Very.

>Gab's dagger looks at Antony in 'Antony And Cleopatra'.

I wish she'd used more dagger than look on the prat. We might have
been spared being forced to watch Xena roll about in a fruitbowl with
it to a One Maniac song.

>Xena telling Ares that Gabs was the father in 'Seeds Of Faith' and Ares

My favorite. Gab's reaction to it was excellent, as well--much like
the faces she pulled in reaction to "Is that a hickey?" and "I still
don't get what you see in her."

>Ares burying the two of them together in 'Looking Death In The Eye'.

If he'd stuck 'em in the same coffin...maybe. The resulting body heat
would have caused sufficient ice melt to rid us of the idiotic 25-year
leap into the future.

I can't think of any, offhand, though fluffsterbrian came up with some
very good ones in his post to this thread. Even so, we really could
have expected more than Kodak moment subtext at this point in the
series. I was soooo looking forward to supercharged subtext when the
season began. Now, I'm just left with the creepy feeling of having
opened a new bag of Oreo cookies to find all the creamy white middles
licked off by an unknown and probably cootie-coated tongue. I want my
money back.

/me raises his hand... What's a cootie?

Cooties are the bearers of undesirable physical or mental traits.
Seems I remember a game called "Cooties" that involved rolling dice and
acquiring parts of a 'cootie' until you had a fully assembled creature
that looked something like a cross between a grasshopper and a fly.

Perhaps Rob Tapert has cooties in his head these days. A good head-
opening slice with a chakram might be just the thing to let them
out. :)

Yeah, I remember playing the game with my brother when I was a small tot. (Not
a tater tot, though <thinking of eating at Sonic>) Cute game. Anyone remember
Candyland and other Milton Bradley games from the late 60's early 70's? Anyone
remember Trouble? (The game, not referring to any of our fine ATXers).

Trouble had a board with pegs that you moved from peghole to peghold by pushing
down on this plastic bubble thingie that popped some dice in the air. You
could move the number of times that the dice showed -- but you were sent back
lots of steps if in the end you overshot by the dots on the dice.

Well, what's keeping you? If you really like it, you can usually find it at
good used book stores as well. Of course, as a corporate librarian turned
database maven, I should be proud that you want to use a library...

Marketed in the UK under the name 'Frustration'. Sorta what I'm feeling
about several topics at the moment.

a bit of lese majeste after previous posts, BUT . . . . some good stuff in
Seige of Amphipolis. I didn't much care for the boytoy %$#@, but there
were compensations:

Making Athena an out lesbian(the first one they made explicit in the
series: no subext required) was a first step, then Athena using her
understanding of that kind of relationship to predict what Xena would do
next, using it to understand 'Xena's unwillingness to lose Gabrielle'.

Nice bits with Xena's mom. First, Gabrielle handed Cyrene the baby, very
much 'our child'. Second, mom's 'Oh, what am I goning to do with you two'
at the end.

Last, the yummy look of contempt on Gabrielle's face, when Xena tells Ares
she felt nothing.

Lotsa 'Them Bones, Them Bones'; Gabrielle's "Xena--I love your baby like it
were my own. I will do anything I have to to fight for it's life, and I
deserve that chance as much as you do."
X: "Remember, don't let go of the dagger."
G: "I won't. Xena, don't let go of me."
X: "Never."
Loved that ep... Though I didn't like it when Alti won against Gabs without
lifting a finger, LOL.
