Mulder has not been at his best in Season Four. It might have
started back in "Talitha Cumi"/"Herrenvolk" but the first major
sign of Mulder acting outside of his role as FBI agent was in "The
Field Where I Died". His pursuit of the case for his own personal
satisfaction is noted by Scully and, besides being worrisome for
his unbalanced mental state, is a concern with regard to his
ability to approach a case without putting its outcome and other
people's safety at risk. This same ego-involved break from
Mulder's professionalism is noted in "Paper Hearts" and "Demons"
in particular. Sometimes Mulder seems to be the only one who is
at risk of being hurt, but Scully seems worried on more than one
occasion for the safety of others.
Essay #11 should focus on this breakdown for Mulder in Season Four.
Do you agree or disagree that he is obsessed to a greater degree
than at the beginning of Mulder and Scully's journey together? Do
you feel that this is more than a focused quest and is bordering on
an unbalanced mental state of late? Have the folks at 10-13 been
leading up to the apparent fallout in "Gethsemane" or is Mulder's
fourth season angst just par for the course? Answer any or all of
the above or approach Mulder's mental state in Season Four in any
other manner that strikes a chord with you.
There's been quite a break since the last essay challenge so I'm
not sure how many people will be participating now that we're into
the hiatus. Keep in mind that EVERYONE is welcome and encouraged.
The essay can be any length, short or long, and any tangential
topic...even slightly off-topic is welcome. I'm going to try to
keep the essay challenges alive for the hiatus but if there is
little or no participation I will probably lay them to rest. You
don't have to be a writer, you don't have to be profound, you just
have to be willing to hammer out a couple of paragraphs and from
the caliber of posts I've seen in the last year, I know there are
plenty of you out there who would be well appreciated. If you
decide to join the challenge, put "ESSAY#11: title" as the
subject header and post on or by Sunday. Hoping for some takers.
