you knew in advance you could not stand to watch it?

Much as I love this program, I will not be able to see it this week. I've
even had to turn off my TV several times when ads came on for it because the
ads literally made me nauseous.

My reason...I have an insect phobia. Seriously. I cannot deal with bugs
(although I don't run screaming from them if they stay outside in their own
place. Let them get in my house though and it's another story...)

So I'm curious here. Has anyone else ever been in the situation of being
incapable of watching a particular episode?

Is anyone else planning on giving this week's show a 'pass'?

MJ

P.S. this is actually kinda funny, in a weird sort of way...normally when I
watch this show, my hubby is around too. He's not a fan, mind you, he's just
there in the room while I am watching...usually he reads the newspaper, or
whatever...anyhow, it's a rare program indeed where he does not look up at
least once and say something like 'This is disgusting! How can you watch such
a gross program? It is sickening!' Well I must admit that occasionally I
can't disagree with him. Some of the programs do get pretty gross. But they
don't bother me. Bits of bodies, graves, aliens, whatever. No problem here.
But bugs? uh uh not this kid...

Trust me! (Or just Trust no one!) You will not be alone. There is *NO* way I will watch this weeks show!

I have *severe* roach phobia. I grew up in Coastal Georgia where the german cockroaches get to be 3 or more inches long. I truly d=
on't fear anything but roaches.

I first saw the preview on tuesday night during alien nation. After about 2 seconds, I was screaming and frantically looking for th=
e remote. After that, ever time I saw the "Strange Luck" preview that leads into the X-files preview, the channel got flipped fast!=
I couldn't even bear to watch the preview. I'm telling my SO tonight that there will be no way that I will tape it for him to wat=
ch either. I won't even risk the possibility that I will see it!!

This will be the first and probably only episode I will never-ever watch of the X-files. I'll probably spend most of friday night t=
rying to keep my skin from crawling while I look for imaginary roaches that I will *swear* are all over the place :)

So, just remember - you won't be alone! Maybe we should start our own group for support - "The X-files Bug-phobia support group" m=
eetings every friday night when there is one to many roaches on the screen :)

Don't feel bad. My wife says she won't watch this weeks show either.
Sometimes she looks away during the show, but this is the first time she
has stated she won't watch it. I have a friend who also says she won't
watch it. I, on the other hand, look forward to it.

Nothing has ever freaked me out, making me not watch an episode. No
Way!

However, I still haven't watched "3". No Gillian, no watch! :-)

I had a problem with the snake in the episode about the devil-worshipping
school board (the episode with the German title I can't spell off the top
of my head). I tried to close my eyes during the snake scene, but, of
course, I peeked. :) Other than that, I generally don't get scared
by the X-Files. I know that will probably disappoint the writers who try
to be scary, but I find the stories so far removed from my real-life
experiences that I have no trouble separating the fantasy from reality on
this show. The snake hit me in my personal phobia, so if there was an
episode about snakes.... lots and lots of snakes..... I would have a real
problem. But I would watch anyway so that I wouldn't miss anything.....
but I would be peeking out from behind my half-closed eyelids the whole
time..... and probably having nightmares afterward.

Actually, insects don't bother me that much (on TV-in real life
I hate them). I think "2Shy," which I watched while eating-ugh-
was a bigger "gross-out" show than this one.And "The Host" was
a disgusting one too. In fact, I don't think the X-Files has
EVER been flat-out scary, just gross.
As for deliberately missing an episode, I avoided "Dod Kalm"
the first time around and only saw it again by accident. For
some reason, ever since I was a kid, rapid aging has always scared
the beejezus out of me-don't ask me why.
Of course, as the title of this post says, I confronted my fear
and watched the episode. Now it's one of my faves.
This means YOU can do it too. Go watch that show that you KNOW might
give you nightmares. I dare you.

Maybe you need immersion therapy. Just repeat to yourself over and over
again "just because they're on my television doesn't mean they're in my
house." You'll be fine. Trust me. I'm almost a psychologist :-)

No, but I probably would have been a few years ago.

Two of my really good friends couldn't watch the whole "Chaco Chicken" episode.

What is wrong with you people?? There is nothing in the X-Files that
is either (i) gratuitous, or (ii) unnecessary. Keep on moaning about
this and that and you'll end up getting the show censored, or worse.

I skipped the cockroach episode. It sounded dumb.

Whoops! My mistake: missed the insect phobia part. Thank you to Ben
Violette for mailing me and pointing that out.

Apologies (foot firmly in mouth).

My friend Jo once had a car accident to rush home to see a rerun she
was taping at the same time.

I hate gore and gratuitous ickiness. That said, I've never found an
X-files unwatchable, except...

....For the one that resides in my memory banks as "The guy who tried to
boil himself." I only made it ten minutes into that ep, and I still have
nightmares.

The cockroach episode didn't 'bug' me (sorry!) at all; however my
boyfriend, a native of NYC, still wants to sleep with all the lights on!
