anybody know the reason behind the whole "snapping latex" comment Mulder
made to Scully.

and don't say it was because of the planets aligning or any crap like
that. there has to be some underlying reason for it.

Considering Mulder's interest in porno, this has a certain connotation of
"condoms" as well...

my vote is that it was a snide reference to condoms. although, when i
think about it, that doesn't make much sense.

I believe the whole latex comment was about Scully snapping on
those latex gloves...correct me if I am wrong, but that's what the
context suggested to me, anyway.

It was a joke; a sexual innuendo. And a very funny one as a matter of
fact.

That's a very thoughtful analysis. But the first thing I thought when
Mulder made that comment was, "condom joke" (particularly rude since
Scully [as far as we've seen] hasn't seen a condom in all its glory in
at least three years!). Anyway, my mind is always in the gutter....

I think also this is an inside joke in the medical industry, that people will
kid about putting on prophyllactics, because in medicine the job is basically
the same, protection from disease and unwanted contamination :-)

That's what I thought the joke was, not necessarily a personal joke against
or to Scully.

I'm not sure where the "Snapping" came from in Mulders mind, but given the
gargoyle episode, there's a lot still to discover in his psyche...

Ummm, okay, maybe I'm reading too much into this here, but I saw several
possibilities. One was an obvious (surface) reference to the earlier
scene when he pointed out the "horny beast" and asked her "if it wasn't
too much trouble" to get some pictures made of the mark on the dead boy's
chest. She snapped on her gloves hard and said "Sure, fine" *snap!*
"whatever." Number two is, of course, the condom meaning.

But what about this? Mulder has specifically referred to his meetings
with Skinner as "bend-over-and-grab-your-ankles" sessions -- comparing
Skinner's verbal reamings to a proctology exam. Mightn't he be directing
a slam at Scully in this manner? Accusing her of not backing him, of
"reaming him out," as it were? Makes sense to me. . . .

I mention this because I have been thinking about it and haven't seen any
posts suggesting it. Sooo, what do y'all think?

Well, the condom possibility did enter my mind but I
don't think that's what it was. I think Mulder was
just busting her ass...sorta like..."Oh, okay there

Ya think?

Several folks have suggested a condom reference. I agree
that Mulder was making an emotional pun, as it were,
between Scully's enthusiasm for her work (which
quite legitimately requires gloves), and latex
sexual toys: not just condoms, but gloves, enema
bags, rubber lingerie, all that kinky stuff.

I think it was a "double-edged" comment--remember when M&S, & det. White
were looking at the boy's body in th acasket after the wake where it
suddenly burst into flame? When White tried to point out to Scully what she
and Mulder saw (the horns), And Scully blew it off, then White left and
Mulder snottily asked Scully to get pics of it (ok, here's the point I'm
trying to make--REALLY! <G>), Scully is putting on the latex gloves and as
she says her now-classic "sure. fine. whatever", she *snaps* the latex glove
on quite loudly (that must have hurt); I doubt Mulder missed it. I think he
was teasing her about it, letting her know he didn't miss it, and was
reminding here about it.
The other "edge" may very well be a sexual one...Mulder isn't above that
kind of thing, and it certainly would fluster the proper Dana Scully (who,
as far as we know, does *not* watch porno)! <G>

Man oh man, and here I thought that it was a sly remark about latex condoms.

Moulder was joking that snapping on latex gloves was a turn on for
Scully, or at least that's how I interpreted it.

Um maybe he was talking about Latex gloves, seeing she is a phorensic
doctor! Perhaps the reference was saying she has a fetish for them?
rather than them being necessary to her job?

Well I haven't seen this episode yet so its a very rough guess!! ;->

Apparently you've missed several episodes. He has been known to watch
porn in several episodes, and indeed in one of the first episodes was
perusing a magazine right in his office. Scully often jokingly berates
his interest in it.
