> I was watching the preview of Friday's(11/11) episode of the X-Files,
and I saw something that might be of great interest to fans of both the
X-FIles and Twin Peaks. Near the end of the preview, there is a clip of
agent Scully lying on a table, wit h a man in a white military uniform
walking toward her. If I'm not mistaken (and I hope I'm not), the man
looks like Don Davis aka Major Briggs from TP. The clip is only on for
about half a second, but it looked pretty clear. If anybody has seen th is
Don Davis also played Scully's father in the 1st season episode "Beyond
the Sea." He is reprising that role in "One Breath."

Thanks for the promo, cyber-sel! And now...there's two stories. THE
VANISHED, the followup to OUT OF THE WOODS has been posted on the
.creative. Many of your favorites from TP are back (tho no
Dennis/Denise. Sorry! Check out SHIPS for that :).
Some other ppl have voiced a distaste for a Twin Peaks/X-Files
crossover, but I (being a long time Peaker) think it would make for a
fascinatingly bizarre episode.
If anything...a passing conversation between Coop and Mulder. I
wonder what that would be like...:)

If you saw last year's episode "Beyond the Sea," you would know
this character was Scully's Dad. The fact that it is the same
actor and he seems to be playing the same character he did on
Twin Peaks is probably not accidental.( However the TP character
was a lot more brutal than Scully's Dad seemed to be. I think we
can chalk it up to an insider's sight gag and leave it at that.)

How was Maj. Briggs brutal? I thought that he was a very intelligent,
sensitive and caring person. Sure in the first couple episodes he did
seem that way, but we gradually got to know Garland and found that it
was not the case. This was typical of TP wherein nothing or no on was
he first seemed.
This was my first episode of X-Files with the character and I really
got a kick out of seeing him. He was very much like Garland.

Same guy. He played her father in last season's episode, in
which he died; same role this year. TP's got nothing to do
with it. An actor's gotta work, you know...

Well I think that the connection between the two is not just
co-incidental. The writers and producers of the show must
realize that fans of X-Files probably also were fans of TP.
And they would know that subtle connections would please fans.
Sally--
Briggs was "Bobbie's" Dad in TP. In more than one episode, Briggs
pounded the living snot out of the kid. Not someone I would want
to sit down at the dinner table with.
I suspect the character in the X-Files was a lot more gentle to
his daughters.
WOW, that must have happened in one of the syndicated TP eps. I did miss
a few they got pretty bad.
But the only time I remember Maj. Briggs getting MAD at Bobby was when
Bobby was smoking and acting like a big brat. He did not "beat the snot
out of the kid" as you say, he just knocked the cigarette out of his
mouth. Bobby was a two-bit punk, and deserved some what he got. Though
Bobby eventually did p ove he was redemable, and had some of the char-
acter, and spirituality of Garland.
Am I the only one who thinks Maj. Briggs WAS NOT brutal? Throughout the
years on the net, from what I have read, Maj. Briggs is one of the best
loved characters. And it is most everyone's opinion that he was the one
to rescue Cooper. Maj. Briggs it appears has showed more courage and
maybe even purity than Cooper.

Major Briggs was not "brutal" but there still was this understated
unsettling factor with him.

Nope...
The most he ever did was slap a cigarette out of Bobbie's mouth. Major
Briggs was one of the most honorable, compasionate and strong characters in
Twin Peaks. Definite White Lodge material...
: Nope...
One of the main themes of Twin Peaks (IMHO) is that things are not as they
seem (not just owls). The series started in what seemed to be an innocent
small town, but as the shows progressed you realized that there was little
innocent about it. My impression of Major Briggs was an inversion of this.
At first I thought he was a stereotypical authoritarian military dad, but
by the end of the series I too described him as honorable, compassionate
and strong.
BTW, when I say stereotypical, I mean that that is how they are presented on
TV. One of the great things about TP is how Lynch subverted classic TV
stereotypes--small towns, FBI agents, and so on.
