Probably because Modell wasn't trying to "push" Skinner into doing
anything. Also, he was probably too weak to control both Holly and
Skinner. Besides, having Holly under his control enabled him not to have
to control Skinner - I think she did a good enough job of allowing him to
escape, don't you? :)

I'm as confused as a baby in a topless bar.
First of all, Pusher needs some time to build up his suggestion. In the
couple cases that we saw him use his ability he had to repeat his suggestion
several times to make it work. Pusher only got to put forth the suggestion
before Skinner threw him against the wall, he never did the whole thing.
It's also probable that he was a little drained from 'pushing' the female
agent (Holly?). He obviously expends quite a lot of energy on his 'pushes'.

My impression was that he could only focus on one person at a time.
(Remember at the start, in the cop car, for instance: he was only working on
the driver.) In which case, in the Russian roulette scene, Scully should
have attacked him while he was locking wills with Mulder.

I don't think so. He got everyone in the hallway with his "PASS". In the
room he had to totally control Holly. When Skinner came in he was already
into jumping into some ass, and even then Skinner had his mind clouded
about the "PASS" thing. It looked to me like he couldn't totally control a
person that was resisting him if he had to do control another person at
the same time.
Gary
How about when he wrote "PASS" on the piece of paper and walked by the
guard. The guard was instantly under his suggestion. There was no build up.
It could be that smaller things require no time, while the larger things
need some time to build up.

Good point. And I agree with your conclusion. Here I think it is a question
of the type of suggestion. A suggestion can be graded by how much it
conflicts with the subjects own desires. So, getting someone to kill
themselves or to repress Skinners suspicions about an unathourized trespass
would be harder than a suggestion that seems logical or natural.
The guard at the door was looking for badges--"passes". Thus it is an easier
"push" to suggest that a piece of paper with the word "pass" on it would look
like a valid badge. Had the guard known what Pusher looked like, or was on
the look out for him, then the push would've taken considerablely more effort.
Basically, to get someone to commit an action that drastically conflicts with
their own desires requires a "build-up" or a great expenditure of energy. To
suggest something that is close to what one thinks, is more natural and thus
much easier to do.

I'm not gonna even touch this one. Too easy!

It seemed to me that the pusher got a kick out of having other people hurt
each other...friends hurting friends...So it was kind of even a larger
victory to get away from Skinner with the help of Skinner's own
co-worker.
I dig skinner. He represents the solid no-nonsense guy who just keeps
trucking through everything..getting shot or whatever. I like to think
that because of his nature and attitude, even if the pusher tried to give
him the whammy it wouldn't have worked anyway.
