Is it just me or did Scully gain a few pounds since the end of last season?
Her face seemed more rounded out and even a little pudgy. I think she
looked a lot better before.

I always liked the episodes where they were trying to hide Gillian Anderson's
pregnancy. She looked kind of doughy there. But that's ok, it gives her
curves... I like her like that. I thought she looked great in the season
premiere. If I was around her I'd probably be the only guy saying: "Ms.
Anderson, here, would you like another donut?"

GA is incredibly skinny now if you watch the 1st and 2nd seasons' eps again and
compare. To me she's still pretty, but I mean...what a difference! I wouldn't
wanna see her bones stick out like miss McBeal, though.

That poor woman! If she's not bloody anorexic then she's a fat sod! Better
she has a few curves than look like Calista Flockheart's skinnier sister!
Imo, it seems too many actresses are going for the "famine" look, ie: the
thinner you are the less talent you have - appearances are everything for
the superficial actress - of course if you have real talent you do not need
to obssess over your weight , like GA! :)

I didn't mean to say that Gillian Anderson should become anorexic. I'm
sorry if I gave the impression of being super-critical over a small
weight change. I still think GA is one of the most talented and
beautiful actresses in TV or the movies!

Its just that I always liked Scully before (season 5) because I thought
she looked especially sharp and intelligent, particlarly when she does
"the look". (ie one eyebrow raised, face all serious...you know the
one) Whenever she does that all I can say is, "Wow!"

I'm glad to see she's gained a little weight. She's been way too thin the last
couple of seasons.

Bravo! I applaud such a well-thought, witty retort. It is unfortuanate
such superficiality remains woven into the fabric of our society. Yes, GA
is attractive, but so is her character. My guess is if her first major role
were on any other show, she wouldn't nearly be as desired as she is now. I
think that alone is a tribute to the sexyness of intelligence and other
non-physical characteristics.

Yeah, I think she's gained a little weight. But IMHO it's not really a bad
thing, she still looks good. It's kinda funny that she was her skinniest
during the cancer arc, then again makeup could also have contributed to
that. I think she looked her absolute best in the movie. It's wonderful
that GA is not a little anorexic barbie like most women on TV. It makes the
show more realistic and proves that women can be beautiful without having to
be 5'7 95 lbs.

Thank you for bring the only person in this thread with something sensible
to say. Maybe I was mistaken but I always thought places like this were used
for discussing vaguely serious aspects of the show. One of the longest
threads here is a testosterone fuelled debate on whether women can gain a
coupla pounds (not saying she has or hasn't - we don't have season 6 here
yet, and I don't particularly care either way) and still be sexy. And I
notice that the talk about Calista Flockheart contains absolutely no concern
for her health, and lots of concern about whether she has any boobs!!!!!???

Take if from someone who isn't much younger than Gillian Anderson...weight
fluctuates. Perhaps she lost weight for the cancer mytharc and is now
returning to a weight which is comfortable for her.

I really like how Mulder still loved Scully even when she was just a bit too
heavy (because GA was pregnant/just had a baby) and I am grateful CC didn't
change her role in any way because of her weight gain.

While I want this thread to stop (the topic makes me sick), I must just
say one thing.

Weight is how much gravitational force an object has. It changes in
diffrent places, etc.. So what you are trully taking about is GA/S's mass.

needs to gain some weight).

No, I don't really care about her health all that much... I don't know
her... and I assume she is an adult (ei, responsible, nevermind the
victim of society bit)... I am also unaware if her appearence

Oh, really? How is it that I've been using a value about half that?

The difference, arguable though it is, can't be more than
5-10 pounds. And look at the response we get! I've noticed
DD adding a little more bulk, and then getting skinnier, and
never a word said about it.

No wonder the nation's young women are anorexic and bulimic!

Poor Mike... I know you didn't mean to cause such a stir,
but please realize that it's exactly this kind of meticulous
attention to a woman's weight that causes a lot of the
problems women have with their self-image.

Hey - you don't stop loving someone just because they put on a little
weight....<G>

I too applaud CC for sticking with Gillian, and not strictly because of the
weight issue.... he could have very easily written her out and replaced her, but
he stuck by her, and I don't know how many other Executive Producers would
have....It was a potential disaster for the show, but they pulled out the Scully
abduction mytharc, and it played just fine...

Yeah, but what if Mulder got a gut and a bald spot? Would you still love
him?
What if he looked like Eddie Van Blundht?

I'd like to think I'd still be interested, but since most of what I know
about Mulder is based on his appearance, his facial expressions, his body
movements, how he acts, I dunno. It's not like he's a real person in my
life. The body and face are tools of expression for the actor. They have to
look a certain way to have credibility.

But I believe in a double standard. I have to. There's so much proof it
exists. I thought Scully was still very attractive when GA was pregnant (I
should be so lucky), but some of those early hairdos.. .

The point is, well I don't know--I guess I'm just stirring the pot. As a
person, I'm sure if GA were my friend I'd love her if she turned into a
blimp but as Scully I'm not so forgiving. (I'm not talking about 10 or 15
pounds one way or the other)

I'm even less forgiving of male actors (I think it's my revenge for the
fact women are held to a narrower scale--puns intended- than men). Love
Harrison Ford, but he's a little long in the tooth for romantic leads
anymore. And Clint Eastwood, I think some of his movies are just excuses
for him to have a woman half his age panting over him. Of course (double
standard alert), I think it's perfectly all right for a young guy to be
fascinated by a much older women <g>.

GA had such a pretty bloom when pregnant. Couldn't disguise that with a
trenchcoat.

Post pregnancy? One Breath? Hel-lo?!?!?! I wish someone had pulled her aside
and said "Wrap an Ace Bandage around your chest, sweetie." Or, they could've
explained that she had high hormone levels (which would've tied in well with
the later infertility revelation). (If they even had that in mind when they did
One Breath. Which I doubt. They make it up as they go along.)

I think she's put on a few pounds. She said once in an interview she was a
little too buff and muscled for her taste at one point. She's so small, any
kind of weight fluctuation or change in workout must show in a big way. She's
still a marvelously attractive woman.

And speaking of marvelously attractive:

(you know what I'm seguing into, no doubt)

Mitch Pileggi has supposedly said he gained a few pounds when he quit smoking
during his wife's pregnancy - or you could call it pregnancy sympathy weight. I
haven't seen it, except maybe, maybe in the Inside the X-Files special, but
then neither do I care. The man's fucking scrumptious, end of story.

Duchovny has put on some weight and, this'll get me beaten up for sure, isn't
really aging well. Look at a season one ep. Look at him now. Some real miles on
the boy. He's not bad to look at but will he be a good looking man in 10, 15
or 20 years? I don't think so. More's the reason to push yourself as an actor,
David.

By the way, I look like a sack of shit myself but have at least hired a trainer
and am busting my ass 3x a week. But then, I'm not an actor whose livelihood
depends on appearance either, so if I don't have an excuse anymore, neither do
they.

Points have been made about how this thread all feeds into the insanity of our
obsession with thinness. True. It's a shallow, sad world in which we all wish
we looked like someone else. It's the late 20th century and a good portion of
us in the US never have to actually worry about a damn thing compared to, say,
the struggles faced by our grandparents, and greatgrandparents. Like: food,
medicine, the crops, whether the mule will make it another winter. We've got
all this time to worry about whether we need a new Prada bag or a tummy tuck or
another shade of red in our hair or whether we should go to yoga or kickboxing
or have another lover or watch some X-Files. A little perspective, please. And
perspective is such a rare commodity here at the fin de siecle.

Actually its the fault of the media (men usually) - forcing people to
believe thin = beautiful. Though try and convince me that the emaciated look
is attractive. Most guys I know go more for a curvy look ie: Kate Winslet
voted body of the year. She quite rightly said the whole body fascism in the
USA was dreadful and dangerous to teenagers. However this is a looks
obsessed world we live in.

Hey Kimba,
I'm middle aged but seem to get shallower as the years pass at least as far
as my interests in male pulchritude <g>.

Besides, I'm talking fantasy, not reality. If I'm going to have a fantasy
lover he'll be a bundle of contradictions-- young but experienced, buff but
fascinated by middle age spread, sensitive but bold.
I just think so many people write what they think they are supposed to
feel. If they were really honest they might find themselves caught in a
paradox. ("Caught in a paradox. Can't get out. Because I love you too much
baby." Think Elvis <g>).

I'm very subjective in my real life eye for beauty. It truly is the soul
for me. My dear friends just get better lookin' every day, and the pretty
boys with souls of glass are aging fast. I always find something that turns
me off -- a snaggle tooth, an annoying personal habit, dullness. Now if
they happen to be pretty, charming, affectionate, playful and interesting
fellows to boot, that's a different matter. I love to play.

I totally agree. I doubt David'll be a Sean Connery or Harrison Ford as far
as getting better with age goes. He's still good looking (nay, fabulous!)
but, as you say, his acting will have to make up for it in years to come.

Gillian gets better with age in the looks and acting! Bugger the weight

For all my early snarkiness on the weight issue, I think DD will get better
looking as he gets older. My theory--new found bliss in married life and
impending fatherhood have kept him out of the gym, plus the X-Files
honeymoon is over. Give him a role in a movie where he has to trim down,
and he'll drop the pounds faster than you can blink. I'll bet it doesn't
take much for him to drop weight and with those cheekbones, he'll always be
a looker.

Same is true with Gillian. I'm sure the reason she jokingly said she'd give
up 3 IQ points is because it takes a lot of work to keep Hollywood
standards especially with millions of eyes measuring you every week. 3 IQ
points ain't much.

I Think she did put on some pounds, but good pounds. I was getting
worried she was going for the I-want-all-my-bones-to-show-look. I think
she looks great. The last thing we need to see is another fragil looking
woman on tv.

While we're on the subject DD's face also looks fuller than it has

I wish there were more people like you out there. I mean, here I sit at 5'4"
120lbs, and some people think I need to "shed a few pounds" How is someone
going to be comfortable with the way she looks if others keep telling her
that if she's not a size 2, she's too big. IMHO, a size 7 is not fat, and GA
looks good just the way she is! She looked fine in season 1, and she looks
fine now. We can't expect people to stay the same weight for 5 years, can
we? I mean, don't weigh the exact same amount I did in 1993.

Tell that to my friend who is a size 1 and eats like a horse, and asks me
why I eat a salad for lunch. Sometimes I just want to slap her when she
complains that she gained a pound! Oh no!! I am a size *2* now! Oh, the
horror!

Like Ally McBeal...I can't stand to watch that show. Calista looks like all

suppost to find watching that *entertaining*??

Oh, I don't know about the straight line thing...I like a guy with a good
butt. Easier to squeeze. <eg>;)

Velcro will not hold up a mirror on a winshield.

Bull! A friend of mine is about the same height and ten pounds heavier...
just perfect to my eyes...

How is someone

: going to be comfortable with the way she looks if others keep telling her
: that if she's not a size 2, she's too big.

Women always have self esteem problems... I find it mindboggling to see
women who are stunning go through the usual routine of self-doubt... they
compare themselves to freaks instead of appreciating the way they are...
It almost as if their worth is measured in the suffering they must go
through...

IMHO, a size 7 is not fat, and GA
: looks good just the way she is! She looked fine in season 1, and she looks
: fine now. We can't expect people to stay the same weight for 5 years, can
: we? I mean, don't weigh the exact same amount I did in 1993.

Agreed!

:
: I agree with that. Kate isn't fat. A size 10 isn't fat. Marilyn Monroe wore

I think Kate is stunning... one of the few actresses to have a full

face... I can't stand the hollow staving look...

Really? Sorry for me the hair was awful and the clothes were scary. Sure she
was as attractive as ever but the hair did nothing for her. It is so much
better now.

Funny I did not notice squat about her weight. Then again I watch it because
I happen to really enjoy the writing, directing and acting. As I recall even
during her pregnancy her acting quality was still superb. Camera angels were
limited but her acting was not. I think she looks as wonderful as ever and
alive and healthy. Of course I dont judge a show by the weight of the actors
either, But then again I am a mature grown up.

I don't compare myself to her, I just cringe everytime she complains about
being fat, and expects me to say "no, you're not fat...you look
*wonderful*!" I think she's just saying it to get people to tell her she
isn't.
